Eldorado WineYour article about Buckfast wine is correct, it is not drunk by bums, more by teenagers in Scotland. Its not 17%, it's 15%. Eldorado Wine is the drink which 'bums' get out of it on, it's 17.5%, and will kick the ass of anyone who drinks it, but you will only find it in Scotland, and towns in England were Scots frequent. It has legend stamped all over it, people swear it is more like drinking some sort of powerful drug, as people feels invicible and will take on anyone when full of it.

How delightful to see such a positive review for England's own "White Ace" brand extra strong white cider (7.5% and only ?1.99 for two litres).

I am presently quaffing a fine jug of the same. Tomorrow I expect the full range of post-"White Ace" conditions: crawling flesh, fear of everything, inability to board trains/buses/public transport without open flies and no small change...

What a drink!

Long live self-abuse!

Let me tell you, I live right down the street from a Salvation Army shelter and for years I was finding these bottles on my lawn. Thanks to your site I was tempted into trying them. Great site man. BrandtI just to weigh in and say that this is a fantastic site.

I remember a few years back living in the west side Atlanta ghetto where the corner store coolers either had the wines this site features or more varieties of malts than I can remember. There were many times I would come home from work and get the sixer of Olde English 800 tall-boys for like $3.69 and a 750ml grape MD 20/20 for $2.99 with devistating results. I still would give anything to know what is TRULY in that wicked MD! After killing that 750ml and only like 2-3 ole e's I was lucky if I wasn't face down on the carpet, or worse still able to move around and cause all kinds of distruction. That is some wicked shit...approach with caution for sure.

Anyway, props on the site, keep up the good work....

Ohhh, Mad Dog. Back in High School it seemed like a good idea at the time. It was cheap, and to us - it didn't taste all that bad.

However... MD 20/20 has quite a delayed reaction. As my girlfriend and I sat on my couch one night, trying to kill some extra bottles left over from a previous excursion...I was starting to get frustrated with the lack of effects.

I drank more. And more. And suddenly, that Banana Red hit me like a freight train. There was no enjoyable drunken point - it was straight to the bathroom, puking my guts out. Then to the balcony to puke some more. Back to the bathroom again, to puke and camp out for the night.

I haven't been able to touch anything banana-flavored ever since that horrible, horrible night.

I shall forever embrace my Miller Lite . Sure, it costs more - and it takes more to get me loaded - but damn, is it worth it!

One of ZZ Top's best songs is "Thunderbird" from the album "Fandango!" I would suggest adding it to the playlist of your next Bum-Wine party. The lyrics are hilarious:

Get high, everybody get high,
Get high, everybody get high.
Have you heard? What's the word?
It's Thunderbird!

Get high, high, high,
Really makes you feel so fine,
Really goes down so smooth,
Really puts you in the groove.
Have you heard? What's the word?
It's Thunderbird!

Haven't written in a while but felt a compelling urge to do so after entry #587 said, "...you can get decent wine for about the same price as the crap on your site if you wait for it to go on sale." and "No need to drink crappy fortified wine!" WHAT THE HELL KIND OF FRESHMAN NONSENSE IS THAT?! The "crap" on your site?! "Decent" wine?! Go on "SALE"?! No need to drink "fortified" wine?! Fuck, dude! There's no reason NOT to drink fortified wine! Man, looks like somebody REALLY doesn't get it!! The guy can't buy "decent" wine till it goes on sale?! How sad is THAT? Great site, lots of useful info for a functional bum. I'd suggest some info on Charles Shaw (Two-Buck Chuck). While perhaps too flavorful to be a full-fledged bum wine, the $2 price tag can't be ignored. And for all the Thunderbird fans out there, check out "Talkin' Thunderbird Blues" by Townes Van Zandt, a beautiful ballad immortalizing the delights of T-bird.

Thanks to your site, I began exploring the bum wines all over again. We used to drink MD in high school, and dint think much about it. Since first seeing your site 2 years ago, I have re-tried MAd Dog, Wild I, Night Train, and Thunderbird, and several cheap-ass fortified wines available only in France. Tonight, I step up to the plate: Cisco. Thus far, Wild I has been the best for flavor, surprisingly. But we'll see how Cisco does for crazy.

I can see buckfast's been well represented by the scots.... i like that. I still feel the need to add something. Although it probably isn't a "bum" wine it still has to be the most lethal drink invented by man. You haven't seen a man at his lowest untill you've seen him consume a bottle in ten minutes as a carry out (warm up drink for the americans) and lose control over his bodily functions. You'd think anyone who shits themselves in a club toilet would call it a night.... apparently not.

All these other drinks are good stuff, especially white ace (the stuff is gut rot) but in my opinion nothing even comes close to Buckfast. The best thing is if you are nice enough to the buckfast people they send you free stuff. My friend got all sorts of Buckfast merchandise for starting a buckfast website (now defunct).

I also think the fact that it's made in Devon (England) yet the only places you can get hold of it with any sort of certainty are N.Ireland and Scotland says something about the effects of Buckfast, namely that the Limeys can dish it out, but they can't take it.

"Buckfast wine
we drink it all the time
and i can't help
drinking the buckfast wine"
(To the tune of "I can't help falling in love with you")

Interesting that your website only displays a few of the former myriad of cheap, fortified wine products. The reason being that, sales of these same cheap, fortified wines i.e., those 18 to 21% ABV in the US began to be restricted by Municipal and County ordinances around 1982. I can remember reading an article in Time magazine of the era entitled: "Cheap wines: More bang for the buck?" The states argument being that the retail of such low cost [some was sold for as little as 89 cents a quart] high octane beverage alcohol in economically disenfranchised-low income urban areas; this in the wake of a previous California Supreme court decision that decriminalized public intoxication [the well known Sundance Decision] had exacerbated standard Inner-City Police problems involving public intoxication and subsequent petty crime, violence, derelict vagrants, homelessness, public health etc. etc. Faced with such ordinances Merchants, or unscroupulous Liquor Stores in such areas had by the mid 80's gradually phased selling fortified wine products out, and supplanting them with low quality Malt Liquor with a higher alcohol content relative to beer. Ushering in the day of the "40 ouncer" and thus ending the reign of the de facto Gallo White Port, Tokay, Diamond Red, Old Santa Fe drinking "Wino." In the US today he's gone by way of the Ford V-8 engine as standard equipment. While Gallo Bros. Still markets Thunderbird as "An American Classic." It's done as an ad specialty in selective areas. In the end dear bumwine.com, it seems that Governments "War on Fortified Wine Product" has proven far more effective than its century old "War on drugs." Because you seldom see the former in use anymore.

We used to drink blue cougar tea, which is when you drink half the bottle of Old English Ice 800 and fill the half empty bottle up with Mad Dog - a recipe for success for sure. We found our way into some Hollywood party and my friend got kicked out for plunging his head directly into the punch bowl to drink without hands. He took the punch bowl with him as we left, and because of our (large) size and copious tattoos, we recieved no resistance. We drank as much as we could before smashing it over the top of a Benz parked outside. After jumping off the roof to stomp on the hood, we went looking for a five dollar rock to smoke. I have drunk with bums in all lower 48, and have to say some of the most fun has been crying over the decimated natural world with Indians on the Wahington Caost, and figting and laughing with crackhead day laborer Mexican dudes living under a bridge in LA. I am always glad to go back to my bed and house, but there is nothing like inebriation with the truly desperate to affirm the joy, passion, and tenderness inherant in the human condition.

Man, this brought back memories. When I stationed in England (FFW!!)in the early eighties we used to drink "Wild Irish Bird Dawg". It was a mixture of the three with 7-up added...the soda smoothed the taste and made people drink more of it... 1-2 hours later they were through. I now drink out of my tax bracket (Cognac VSOP and XO ONLY)but still think about the old days....

We used to drink the stuff when we were broke, as we discovered we could pool our resources and buy a bottle, and get rip-roaring drunk *before* we went out! My god, the stuff was vile! How I ever ingested it, I don't know, think I'd have been better off drinking a bottle of Scope. Even though it's been well over twenty-five years, seeing the picture of the bottle on this site brought it all back like a bad LSD flashblack.

Here in England you can get MD 20/20 and Thunderbird pretty easily. There's even a bar near me called Maddog's that serves the stuff in little 200ml bottles (I'm sure they also brew it in the UK). However, like you said, cheap cider is where it's at for the tramps, kids and raging alcoholics of the UK.

My cheapest buzz? You can get Tesco's own brand organic vodka for about ?7.99--it's a little smoother than other cheap vodkas, but it actually has an ingredients list; it's made out of something like water, alcohol and glycol. I would assume the alcohol is produced industrially and watered down, where as ordinary vodka is brewed and distilled. Whatever, having an ingredients list seems unusual.

Anyway, nice site--how about adding some dangerous tequilas, gringos?

hey fellow drunks. the king of bum wines is not even mentioned on this site and it is a damn shame. for my money i have to say the mighty muscatel is king. ned the wino tips the tel baby! muscatel is the true bum wine.and dont tell me it cost to much.

Comment:
From what we can tell, muscatel is a type of grape, not a brand of wine. Please send in a picture and where you found it!

drunk on mad dog..at those desperate and shameful times when I am "down on my luck"
mad dog 20/20 has always been there for me. to hold my hand.. and guide me into a state of confused forgetfulness that seems to be therapeutic.. in the sense that I not only forget what was bothering me... I feel that thoroughly damages my short term memory in a way that makes it effectively inoperative for 1 to 2 days. For this reason, MD 20/20 been my "wine" of choice for quite some time now...

Admittedly though, this is not due to any sort of research or comparison of what one bum wine has that the other lacks... but rather
due to the fact that I am "tolerant" of it..
... and by tolerant, I mean experienced and familiar enough with the pseudopsychotic effects that this seems to help release from the individual shamefully consuming it to compensate well enough in public to only be viewed as a slightly maladjusted young man, who has a slightly noticeable level of mental retardation...

Plus, there is a certain comfort in knowing that I wouldn't try to punch any police men in the face or set fires to street bums or whatever...

But I must enthusiastically admit, I have a new motivation..... after thoroughly examining this site, and properly reading its entire contents.... I'm more than just a little excited about realizing what my options were; as a cheap, cheap alcoholic that prefers liquors that will drag you to the edge of a slight hallucination or feelings of relapse....

Thank you bumwine.com...
Until this morning....I had never truly considered what wonderment may lie ahead for me.... patiently waiting...in the glass vessels that accompany my good, faithful friend mad dog 20/20. I am quite thankful for this site for that reason alone.. and vow not only to try each of the "wines" that are listed at least once, but to possibly expand my pallet to a new preference.... a new liquid "life partner" with which to enjoy the remainder of my life...
for richer or poorer, until death do us part...

When my friends and I were in high school we used to drink cisco. The red dye # 40 and artificial flavoring helped masked what I could only imagine is some kind of low grade opiate, just kidding. But honestly if you ever want to be so wasted yet fully functioing in the physical sense this is your drink. I never had more do you know what you did last night talks than the mornings after I drank cisco. Especially when the big bottle cost a mere $3.00 circa 1997.

Man does this page bring back some memories of my youth. Damn.

While you found little more than Fred Sanfords references, Ripple really existed. And like Boones Farm and Thunderbird, it was also another great Gallo creation.

Thunderbird, AKA Thunderchicken, often had a packet of Kool Aid poured in the bottle to increase drinkability.

"Whats the word"

"Thunderbird"

"Who drinks the most"

"Colored Folks"

"Whats the price"

"Thirty twice"

And damn did we drinka lot of it in our youth! I may have to just....Oh hell no!

Thanks for the memories.

Frosty JackI returned from a year's stint as a grad student in scotland, and holy nuts I nearly died drinking this stuff- talk about rocket fuel. I ended up stealing a lot of stuff while high on white lightning, and nearly drove a golf cart from the St Andrews links back to my dorm.
Sad but true story: I had a hallmate who was an alcoholic but couldn't afford to go out to the pubs anymore. So instead he did the economical thing and drank 3 lites of Frosty Jack evety night for 2 quid. After a month of doing so, he didn't sleep for 6 nights straight, had a psychotic episode and ended up moving out of the hall on medical leave. Frostry Jack is strong stuff- this could have have happened to you or me, mate. Not to be underestimated.

What ever happen to the wine called Jubilee (streetname "Jube")? Does anyone remember it? It was out in the late 80s early 90s. I never tasted it but it would have been in this catagory. I couldn't find it on the internet anywhere. It was pretty popular with the wino's and teenagers that wanted to get a cheap drunk.

Fascinating and informative. As a former jobless student with a mean thirst, I have a number of fond memories of starting to drink these drinks (of course, I can never remember the end of the drink). I have many a testament to the power and fury of these beverages as well; for example, being awakened by an usher, passed out cold in a stall in the movie theater, with vomit in my eyes and hair. I had always thought Mad Dog was the most foul ooze to leave its stench on our planet, until I sampled the hellish firewater known as Cisco. Since those days I have acquired an hourly wage and graduated to more "respectable" beverages, but I have always wondered what I was missing by never giving Thunderbird and Night Train a chance. Now, I will wonder no more. My mind cannot even process the idea of something tasting more wretched than Cisco. It's like trying to comprehend a fifth dimension.

went to a free screening of v for vendetta, and once we got there we decided we needed some cheap soda so we ducked into a nearby big lots. what we found was a stockpile of cisco (at a steep 1.99 a bottle), and nearby was something called "rage," distributed by a compnay called anarchy. rage is apparently a non-carbonated "nu-beer" that we didn't have the nerve to try, even though it was two dollars for a six pack.

my friend ended up being the one to get sloshed during the movie because someone had to drive.

later that night i ended up opening my cisco bottle and getting hammered off that and some huge bottle of seagrams malt liquor that cost $0.60.

if i'd gone to a bar i would have had to pay at least twenty bucks to get a drunk as i got off about $2.50 (i didn't drink all of it)

Me and my cousin got so liquored up on the Wild Irish that we went totally crazy, we were just riding around in his truck with 12 / 24oz keystone ice beers and a couple bottles of wild I. From there we destroyed about anything possible we could fine. Needless to say our small "village" within the last year that this all happened has formed a police department. We got away, but I havent touched that cheap ass wine in over a year. It was fun until all that stuff happened!

Ever tried Buckfast tonic wine...its the favorite drink of all Scottish winos in the UK. Its very intoxicating and is filled with all kinds of other chemicals. Its made by the Buckfast monks of Buckfast Abbey ,Devon, England!!!

I've read the reviews that have previously been posted on your site. I notice not many Cisco entries. I, my friends, am a living testimony to the carnage is has called itself Cisco. This sinister brew singlehandedly brought three, drinking, grown men to threr knees. Me being the second to hit the pavement. The two-day recovery time is right on point. Functioning was not happening day one. As I type these words I smile. Thanks for the memory.

I had no idea that the "respectable" Gallo bottled Night Train AND Thunderbird. That's insane.
Very informative site!

I've been homeless in Minneapolis for the past year and everyone here drinks cheapest vodka and some drink even cheaper 'wash' (generic mouthwash). Never seen drunks drink 'wine', but then again I don't know much.

I used to live in a much bigger city and throughout the alleys and "pigeon graveyards" were empty bottles of Canadian Imperial Sherry, a favored wine of the bums back home. It's 20% and gives you a nice warm feeling. I see that someone posted about Crest beer as well, we were never fans of that, but Faxe (10%) was the beer of choice for some of us panhandlin' types. They used to come in one liter cans

This site is great. I have to agree with the assesment of Cisco: nudity is almost always involved with this drink and usually just prior to puking. My one and only (?) time with the Cisco was with Peach flavor in college. What a legendary drink. And the headache after was atrocious. Also, does anyone remember something called White Rocket? It had a V-2 style rocket shooting into the sky on the label and was a pale piss yellow color. I never had it, but plenty of my lushier buddies swore by it.

I think you have misunderstood the Buckfast icon here in Northern Ireland and Scotland (the English and Welsh don't drink it!). It definitely does not make you sleepy as it has the same amount of caffeine as 10 strong cups of coffee in a bottle and at 15% after 2 bottle you feel like running around like a madman. It is nicknamed "Dance Fuel" as ravers would drink it to stay awake all night.
