Excellent site. It served well as a guide to celebrating a 21st birthday. You should try a drink called Johnny Bootlegger. One flavor is machine gun Melon. It's so sweet and tasty but beware, Johnny will kick your ass. He will come from behind and beat you, pistol whip you if he must. Oh, Johnny Bootlegger, why do you trick me so much?

Wow! Good stuff! I can remember going to a parade, and my four year old daughter was playing on the lawn behind us and found a Night Train Express bottle -- pint -- and asked "is this good wine, Dad?"

Last summer I was going to a baseball game and two young guys had hidden their bottle of Thunderbird in a free newspaper box. It was still there after the game.

One wine that used to appeal to us in college was Italian Swiss Colony Arriba.

I think it had a fortified alcohol content, and back in the early 70s you could always find a couple of pints in the "special - 39c" basket.

Women preferred the classier "Bali Hai", however.

Gotta say, UK sucks pretty much for bum wines. The only variety i've seen in stores is MD 20/20 which is the 13% brand. Still put me on my ass for the night though!! Boss!

Does anyone know where i can get Nightrain in the UK?

Also...White Storm is a much better alternative to that White Ace stuff. 8% i think and it's ?3 for 3 litres and it'll turn the most placid men into raving loonatics. Check it out in the UK!!

Comment:
There are a few UK bum wines, but their brand is not as strong as in the US. The bumvidence shows that bums grab for hard cider in the UK.

I used to get in a drunken state four times a week until the onset of three day hangovers forced cessation.

Heed my words for this was the beginning of my ruination. Next came responsibility, a career, and respectability. I can see clearly now that all three were horrific mistakes.

By God how I long for the nights of getting a snoot full of cheap juice and howling at the moon like an insane Hyena.

Take it from one who knows; do not let liars poison your mind with the rubbish of sobriety for it is a horrendous deception and they seek to steal your soul.

My friend emailed this to me today. It brought back so many, many vauge memories. Even though I was poor in college I must have been very angry with myself to repeatedly, sometimes, weekly, drink MD 20/20 or Cisco and occasionally Night Train. Needless to say, I graduated college. I think. Although I no longer drink Bum Wines I carry the fuzzy memories of my head pressed against the cold toliet, begging for God to take me now. I just want to thank Laura for never leaving me in the alley ways of Boston. Love you girl! Melis

At 2.99 a pop it's a great deal. Plus it made my bestfrinds boyfriend get really drunk. It was like he was rambling on like a bum. All we could do was laugh.

Ahh you've sadly underestimated Buckfast in your drinking Standards! The investigation is London was useless, Buckfast is only majorly popular in the North of Ireland and in Scotland. I'm not too sure what you were drinking but Buckfast tends to give you plenty of energy before you collapse in a crumpled pile. Although i agree its more for hardened alcoholics as opposed to bums (although they are known to drink it)

You might find this articale interesting

Back in college I worked at a "Ghetto" liquor store for a while. About 80% of our business was winos. FOr some reason, we didn't sell much Mad Dog, though: the drink of choice was that most refined of liquors, Wild Irish Rose. A lot of them had special nicknames for it, like "Fight'cha Momma" ("because that's what it'll make ya do) or "Primrose Path," after the roses on the bottle. There were even a few grizzled old men who'd come in on Friday and buy like 40, 50 pints of the stuff -- all for resale over the weekend when the store was closed due to blue laws.

One day I broke a three-gallon jug of the stuff. Oh god, the pain of the smell . . it etched the wax on the floor.

I currently work at THE sketchiest liquor store in Calgary, Canada. The kind where there's a lineup when you open in the morning. Unfortunately, we don't have ANY of these bum wines. We have E&J Gallo's attempts at high class wines, but no bum wines.

What we do have is Fireball Whiskey Shooter. It's a corn whiskey that's heavily flavoured with cinnamon...stuff. Woowee! That'll get you good and shitfaced. Way too easy to drink and cheap too.

We also have complete bum beer, big 750mL bottles of Extra Old Stock strong beer with a resealable screw cap. Comeplete bum beer. And boy, it sells.

Although I personally think MD 20/20 should be in the same category as Boone's (I guess some of us wanted that extra kick for our buck when we were teens) I generally agreed with your "research."

I think you should move on to include some research on those bums who don't yet know they are bums because they haven't been fired . . . yet. My liquor store managing days are filled with fond memories of the line at the door before we opened and then the rush on pints of Popov once we did open. Popov is like the Wheaties of the "breakfast vodkas." And every single member of my store's Popov Breakfast Crew was a bum-to-be, they just didn't know it yet. And I think they stick with the Popov all the way through into the full-blown bum phase. I know at least one did, and he really did lose his job and house.

I'd like to see Sacramento represented on "Grizzliest Bums"

Roseville, CA in particular.

Roseville has the largest train yard west of the Mississippi River, and is the destination of former inmates from the lovely nearby Folsom Prison. They squander what little cash they have on the way to hop a train, and generally become big smelly heaps in the public library.

Although otherwise normal, 95% are former Folsom Prison inmates... which alone is worth mentioning on your site.

Summer 1976. 5 guys drinking MD 20/20. Steal a huge stone lion from the entrance to a mansion a mile away and deposited on the lawn of our boarding house. We walked the whole way. And I was told that I carried it by myself.

Next morning (afternoon) all 5 of us couldny lift it so we told the landlord that someone left on the lawn but we didn't get a good look at them.

When I lived in Holbrook, Arizona in the mid-80's the Native Americans there favored a fortified wine called "Tokay". It came in a green bottle, and the alley where it was consumed (and bottles broken) glistened in your headlights like to road to Oz.

We called in "Emerald Alley".

Most Minneapolis winos drink White Port--typical sickly sweet hummingbird nectar not suitable for human consumption.

I spent several years at an inner-city liquor store, and White Port battled with T-bird for supremacy, with a strong contingent of Wild Eye drinkers, but White Port was the leader. Gibson made one version, and there were competitors I can't remember.

One enterprising fellow would buy cases of pints to sell to the lads at three times the price on Sundays, when liquor stores are closed in MN. He ended up having a finger hacked off in attempted robbery which wasn't successful. Drunks make inept criminals.

As an aside, many of our fellows reported guzzling Lysol and rubbing alcohol as need required.

Very fond memories of those days. Now all the urban liquor stores are disappearing so forbidden skyscrapers can be erected to drive everybody away, wino and nonwino alike.

I just wanted to thank you for the trip down memory lane( what i can remember).I ran a liquor store from age 19 to somewhere in my mid-twenties,very foggy, and i sampled everyone of the wines listed but no ripple and brought them up to my good friends at the university of maryland(baltimore county)
every friday night and i'm proud to say we are all still alive and have livers functioning at a full 48% capacity. I think it's a rite of passage sampling every cheap bottle of wine out on the market, i mean i think everyone needs to wake up in their own vomit and have their moms come in to wake them up only to slip in your puke in bare feet.

thank you

I'm 61 now; but when I was around 12-13 my best buddy Mel & I were crazy about trains. We rode our bikes around the tracks in our hometown Pgh, PA. We discovered several "hobo jungles". Littered around these cardboard campsites were T-bird, Wild I, Night Train and Mogen David bottles aplenty. (MD20/20 had yet to make the market.)I'm glad there's fifty years of brand loyalty out there. Those brands have not changed their label designs.

"Anyone from Kansas City having a hard time looking for a bottle of Cisco, check out Don's Liquor on SW Boulevard."

I live about five minutes away from Dons, and while I don't have any experience with Cisco, I must say that I am intrigued ... Guess what my husband and I will be drinking tonight!!!???

A friend of mine wanted to try Thunderbird since Tupac mentions it in his song "Never B Peace." Being that she is a cute girl and as I am a pathetic single guy I decided to try and find it for her. I live in the suburbs of Seattle. I drove to every 7-11 and crappy gas station I could find looking for the stuff. I finally found it at an Alerbertson's in Woodinville, WA.

I have to say it isn't nearly as bad as I expected from your site. It isn't good at all, but isn't as bad as I was expecting.

Love the site. Keep up the good work.

HILARIOUS!!!! I was researching md 2020 and i found your site. One thing i have noticed about MD 2020 is it burns my taste buds and i cant feel them the next day. My squadron makes "build-a-bum" packages (Colt 45, USA gold smokes, underware, tooth brush and ect... ) It is more of a joke but we spend all day with them getting drunk. I'll send pics. Great site once again!!

I really enjoyed your site and appreciated the humorous commentaries.

I started working in a liquor store as a night clerk in college in 1975 and wish I had the hindsight to stock away a bunch of Ripple Pagan Pink in my wine cellar, lol.

I was running another liquor store almost 20 years later during the time of the World's Fair in Knoxville, TN. We had people from all over the country visiting, including bums from all over. I had a couple of those bums, (from Detroit - I asked) request some Dr. Vision. Being in the business as long as I had been, Dr. Vision was a new one on me. Then they explained. Dr.=MD and Vision=20/20, Dr. Vision
= MD 20/20. So there you have it, a new name for the Mad Dog of wines!

I graduated from college just a month ago, and I celebrated turning in my last final by downing some Mad Dog. My roommate was raving about this drink, how it would "mess you up fast" and she was adamant about me trying it. So we drove to 5 liquor stores until we finally found one ghetto enough to carry it. I thought I could handle it (I had NO idea it was a "bum wine" or anything that bad). Sadly I drank it w/ the brown bag still on it, so I have no idea of the amount consumed. Needless to say, I spent the night barfing and in a drunken stupor passed out by the toilet and in the hallway. It was horrible. Luckily I was well enough to make it to the commencement ceremony! But as for Mad Dog, NEVER again...

BTW, I love your site! =)

My fraternity had this bad idea to have a "wine night" once every few weeks one semester. We bought ridiculous amounts of MD 20/20 for the Friday night party rather than beer, and the results were sickening. Young men who could usually function reasonably while drunk/drinking were reduced to slobbering messes. The women were even worse. The hook ups were disgusting. The damage to the house was devastating. There were always at least one or two fights when the wine got people mad and ugly. The Saturdays following those Friday nights were VERY quiet, and usually everyone was too sick to party on Saturday night, which was a rarity for my house. Eventually the wine night became a thing of the past and we went back to beer. On another subject, I was watching a documentary recently about the songwriter Townes Van Zandt, in which he mentions he used to drink 20% Bali Hi wine on a daily basis. Also mentioned in this film is that he intentionally fell backwards off of a balcony four stories high just to see what if felt like. I'm sure he was drinking Bali Hi wine that night.

hey, what about "cool breeze"? It's another bum wine that comes in "flavors" ala MD 20/20, and has a very old school label with pictures of fruit on it, very much like an old "ripple" bottle. I haven't seen it around in a while but it was definitely going strong as late as the mid 1990's

I am from New York City. In NYC there are separate laws regulating the sale of "soft" beverages (like beer & wine coolers), generally with an alcohol content of less than 10%, and a separate set for the "hard" stuff. Stores like delis, supermarkets, etc. can only sell the low-content drinks. The "hard" stuff can only be sold in liquor stores, and those stores can only sell liquor - nothing else. When I first became aware of Cisco in 1990, it was sold alongside LOW alcohol drinks. You could get it in the deli or bodega, and it was positioned right next to the wine coolers. If you wanted Night Train, etc. you had to go to a DIFFERENT store - the liquor store. Now, given that my peers and I were average 17 years old in 1990, it was much easier to go to the bodega than to the liquor store. I know of MANY instances where people bought Cisco thinking that it was a wine cooler - not because it was bottled to look like one (which I'm sure was a deliberate move by Cisco), but because of the place of purchase (i.e. a bodega where they were not "allowed" to sell Night Train, T-bird, etc). Of course people got hip to this loop-hole very quickly, making Cisco a popular drink at high school dances, weekend parties, and the like - because it was so easy to get and twice the "punch" of a wine cooler, not to mention the additional "sucker punch" from all the poisons in it.

It was not until 1992 that the "Man" apparently got hip to this anomaly. After that you never saw Cisco in the bodegas any more - it was moved into the liquor store cooler alongside the 20/20, Alize, and Brass Monkey.

I found your website very amusing. I had never heard of any of these drinks other than MD20/20, so last night I went out on a Mission to find Cisco. I live in a suburb of Dallas called Garland that sells beer and wine. I tried a few stores near my house, but they did not cary Cisco. I decided to try a more "urban" area, so I went down to a beer store on Skillman in Dallas. The first store I tried there carried all Five of these beverages! I will take a pic later on to prove it so the store name can be posted on here. Anyway, I get back to the apartment and drink about 2/5 of the 375ml green apple bottle (which cost $1.29) and I was thoroughly drunk (I weigh like 120 lb and never drink). I drank no more for the rest of the night and the next day I was so hungover I was almost 3 hours late to work "sleeping it off". Your low-grade cocaine description is dead on.

I've had all these bum wines while in college 15+ years ago. Nauseating but fun.

However, there was one item in the liquor store I dared not touch.

It was called "Sokolov's Vodka Flavoured Liqueur".

People don't believe me when I tell them about it and an internet search provides zero results.

The label had faux Cyrillic looking characters for the logo and also showed a hawk or falcon (Sokol is Russian for those birds) flying over a battlefield on strewn with the bodies of slain Vikings.

I swear to any and all Gods that this product existed once. Might it be the holy grail of bum wines? My sightings of this marvel have been confirmed by other sources. Anyone else heard of/seen Sokolov?

BTW I do remember seeing Ripple a long time ago.

Over here in Australia, none of these exist. As a teenage drinker, i can tell you that "goon" being cask wine, about 10 dollars for 4 litres, is the bum drink, as well as the cheap party drink, though i doubt it tastes as bad as some of the wines listed here.

I downed copious amounts of MD,Boones Farm, and even had a run in with the Night Train. I worked in a small town liquor store for a couple of years, and once had a customer order an entire case of Night Train pints so he could get his ten percent case discount. I don't think we ever saw him again. But the absolute worse I ever tasted was a totally hideous concoction called Swiss UP. I can't remember where it was made, or by who. Hell I'm still suprised It didn't make me blind. I do remember a very sweet citrus like flavor, and strange things floating in it. I was assured by the person who gave me the bottle, that the floaters were merely citrus pulp. Oh, and let us not forget two other offerings from the good folks at Gallo. Tyrolia, and Bali Hi.

In the early to mid-1990s, my college roommate rarely came back from the grocery store without a new bottle of banana red md 20/20. I hated the way that shit overpowered me with its half-rotten kick, and never thought I'd suddenly grow nostalgic about it. But I have, and now that I really want some I can't find it, or any bum wines, anywhere (in Jacksonville, FL). It has vanished from the grocery stores and the liquor store guy told me they won't carry it at any price for fear of attracting "the wrong sort of customers." What the *&^%? Can anyone help me locate some?

Ok great site some interesting comments from our friends north of the border. Looking back on my bum days a true test of bumness would have to be..

THUNDERBIRD MIXED WITH SPECIAL BREW (OR ANY PREMIUM LAGER - TENANTS SUPER, ETC.)

Please please give this a go, the two flavours intertwine releasing an orgasmic oral experience, the effects thereafter will pale all your individual tipples to insignificance. I recall sharing said tipple with a group of real bums outside Kings Cross station, I then dissappeared for a week! RECOMMENDED.

Before seeing this site I got the great idea to try not one but 2 of the 5 great bum wines in one night. A bottle of Night Train and a bottle of Thunderbird which I dubbed the Thundertrain. People do not try this. Well I don't personaly remember much of the night the stories I've heard are enough to keep anyone away from this lethal concoction. On a side note I once tried to order this drink at a bar since it was on the menu labeled the "ex-wife" the waitress looked at me like I was crazy and told me that was a joke and there was no such drink in existance, boy is she wrong.

i wish they had all these in australia, the bums here tend to go for hard liquor or 'goon'. goon is cask wine which is about $7 AUS for 3 litres at its worst.

As a frequent drinker of MD 20/20 I recommend that everyone try "Mad Dog coolies." I is simply mixing a MD 20/20 with a bottle of cheap champagine. The champagine takes a lot of the edge off so you drink faster and get even more fucked up. My friends and I trashed our kitchen after drinking this concoction.

This site is great, had me rollin'. As a teen in LA used to drink that s**t, and believe me, it'll smash your ass like an asteroid. The liquor store on my corner had a whole wall (a 15' wide section) dedicated to Cisco. Once drank 3 of the large bottles in one night. Transformed into a real-live living, breathing manic. Don't recall a thing. Both hands broken. Woke up naked holding a Tec-9. 3-day hangover. Good Times. Never touched again. It's the mad man's juice. Should rename the stuff(Cisco) 'Brain Bleed'(makes the effects much clearer to consumer).

I was a fan of T J Swan back in the day. Annie Green Springs was another one that was popular.

Anyone from Kansas City having a hard time looking for a bottle of Cisco, check out Don's Liquor on SW Boulevard.

As of right now, I'm just finishing a 750 of Wild Irish Rose, and I usually drink one of these every other day- helps me get to sleep... I find that out of all of them, this is the best for several reasons. I'm too drunk to list them all, but I will say that, over the span of 1 and 1/2 hours, drinking a bottle of WIR is much pleasanter. Here in Alabama, this is what EVERY poor person/bum/college kid drinks, it even goes for $2.30 a dottle here! Imagine. After about half the bottle though, it does tend to dry your throut out immidiatly wit hevery sip, so you have to chase it with water. But, I prefer it over most everything else... wooeoeoee

What about Italian Swiss Colony Muscatel? As I recall, it was a top bum wine in Chicago.

Well, I was always a huge G n' R fan, so I made a point to purchase Night Train the first time I see it and have a few bucks in the pocket.

The verdict: Tastes like ass, but with a kick that really can't be beat. It induces a sort of coma that I had yet to experience.

As I type this, I slowly lose consciousness.

Fuck.

The flavor is something like corn syrup mixed with vodka and kool-aid.

the kick involves a warmth that envelops the entire body, a lack of concern for anything whatsoever and an inability to feel pain.

Note to self: drink two bottles of this a day if you ever become homeless.

Me at 18I just came back from Germany and while there I found a 3 liter bottle of some cheap ass wine and I drank the whole thing. I dont remember anything from that night or the following 2 day period. If you could please try to find this stff Id appreciate it. Neither I nor my friends who were there can recall the name of this stuff but it was really cheap and foul.

I saw this site a couple of years ago, and though I've done quite a bit of drinking in the last couple decades (hardly any now, though), I'd never had any of these.
BUT! Today I went to the local liquor store and bought both Thunderbird and MD 20/20 (Red Grape). Since I'm a wimp now, I only tasted a little of the 'Bird tonight. It wasn't THAT bad, to be honest, but then I'm not drinking it all in one go like a real bum would. Oh, and the bad omen was this: the price plus tax for both bottles was: $6.66!
