In the 1980s, in Racine, Wisconsin, after spending the whole day painting houses in the hot sun, my friends and I would go to the Sunshine Bar and buy bottles of Lambrusco. It did the job. But a bum wine? Not sure. Definitely a small-grimy-town wine.

bumwine is class. surely clan dew deserves front page attention as a wonderful blend of english wine and whiskey, with a gag factor of 9 out of 10. i advise chilling your clan dew to just above the freesing point to render it palatable. keep on bumming!

i used to drink this stuff: mostly Mad Dog and a bit of T-Bird, and mostly when i lived in a warehouse in downtown St Paul Minnesota in the early 80s. it was illegal to live there and a lot of winos haunted downtown (now it's all yuppie condos).

coupla things: 1) it's legal for wine to contain ether as it's a trace element in real wines, so this is added to the sort of wine we're talking about here. i mean, 18% alcohol won't occur naturally, it's basically added to grape juice...well, a bit of ether gets added too. i have no idea what the percentage is. but i know it helps give you the stumblies. that feeling that you're wearing Bozo shoes, slapping on the pavement.

2) the most horrifying of all these beverages is Richard's Triple Peach Reserve. i think it was 21% alcohol, and tasted like slightly rotten peaches, eaten in a city morgue.

Jack

Doesn't Richards make its Peach Wine anymore? That was hands-down my favorite. Its taste made me less sick than any of the others, and you could almost imagine it being drunk out of a glass. Also, in California about 25 years ago I spotted something called Cowboy Wine, but I was unfortunately unable to sample it.

A couple of very bad and powerful bum wines come to mind.
Gold Bell muscatel,Triangle muscatel,Pluck.Tingle and the infamous Italian Swiss Colony Arriba.

Arriba is famous in my neck of the woods for making a buddy of mine pass out ontop of a large US Mail box.
He woke up in jail at 3 AM and wondered what happened to his belt and shoestrings.
He has a Phd and teaches at some southern university these days .

Ah ,the stupidity of youth.

500. Wow, its an honor. I'd like to thank all my Asian and Indian homies at the local liquor stores for supplying me with these quality beverages over the years. I'm glad I was able to put your kids through college. Thank you for not carding me and allowing me to "get started" when I was 15 years old. Thanks to my homeless peeps and single dads who bought me drank when I was just a little ninja shoulder tapping. Special thanks to EZ Stop for keeping the 40's in the lower-corner of the freezer where it was extra cold. And finally, thank you to my liver who has stuck with me through all of this and has been a real trooper.

This site is a gem of knowledge. I would just like to give an honorable
mention to Carlo Rossi Wine, the burgundy of course. Thats what we tend to swig out here in the bay area, CA. You can get a massive jug of this classy juice for $8. Pour it over ice and it tastes like watered down grape juice. But don't get too confident cuz this shit will send you to the curb.

Anyway, I recently downed a fifth of strawberry Cisco. Every store in my hood carries it, and my hood isn't that ghetto. I don't know about that 2 day hangover shit, but it does give you those racoon eyes. After extensive research I have concluded that the secret ingredient is cough syrup.

Later to all my fellow partners in the drinking club.

MD20/20 come in many more flavors. Almost 10 different flavors. I will get you guys the full list by end of week. Also I am surprised you make no mention of the Carlos Rossi Rhine which comes in a nice gallon jug with a neat little handle for around 7 bucks or less. Then you can be slugging the jug. My choice is Rossi and MD20/20 for all my camping trips when i want to fall asleep outdoors.

I've been known to throw back a bottle of Boone's Farm on the weekends, and yes, it is no bum wine. Bum wine should drown your senses. Boone's, while good for social drinking amongst other stupid college students, doesn't get you totally sloshed.

I once picked up a bottle of MD 20/20 on a dare, though. Holy shit. My buddies and I each had a taste of it, and we were all scarred for life.

"You know what the MD stands for?" one friend shouted angrily. "It stands for MAKES your car DRIVE! You can use that for engine oil."

Another friend, who regularly "plays with fire" by downing a shot of Everclear followed by a shot of Hot Damn 151 proof, said he'd rather swallow glass than drink MD 20/20 ever again.

Now THAT'S a bum wine.

Gentlemen - we salute you; your unimpeachable research methodology in the critique of Buckfast Tonic Wine has saved The Common Tramp (homo peregrinans inebriatus europensis)invaluable time in the selection of post-prandial (and indeed pre-breakfastorial) refreshment. in support of your findings I would further tender two observations: the overstrength cider of choice for the discerning wanker on the site in the UK is called "Scrumpy", and is made with West Country apples and occasionally mice.

Mad Dog 20/20 was briefly available here (under variously enticing soubriquets such as "Peach Blush", "Raspberry Suffusion" etc) and whilst marketed towards the more free-living lady, was also briefly utilised as a chaser to gentlemen's pints; in Newcastle's Bigg Market it was customary to purchase a bottle, throw away the cap and have it ready in the back pocket of your jeans as a reliable stopgap, should one of your party be dilatory enough to delay the purchase of the next round by finishing his pint in more than three sips.

I remember the scourge of Cisco showed its face in the NY metropolitan area. Never before has a force hit the street, that was completely legal, and done so much damage. I remember getting ready to hang out with the crew at a club. Stopping a the bodega and getting 2 fifths of Cicso. Stopping at KFC for a two peice with biscuit. Getting so zooted I had to "back up off of it, and set my cup down".Good memories.

This site takes me back to the late 60s and 70s when I was a kid. Winos were all over the place in my neighborhood.
I stepped over passed out drunks and empty bottles of Thunderbird, Wild Irish Rose, and MD 20/20 on the sidewalks all the time.

I lived two blocks from a bar, and two blocks from a liquor store. The bar closed. The drinks cost too much, and the winos couldn't get wrecked fast enough so they'd fight each other and bust up the bar.

Good times indeed.

Hello, nice site however I noticed that your findings for buckfast tonic wine were somewhat inconclusive. As it happens I live in the West of Scotland and it also just so happens that around 95% of all Buckfast that is produced is consumed here, more specifically in Coatbridge I do believe. So in short you should come over here to do some more experiements.

Well this was one of my many bum wine experinces but it was a memorable and bizarre one to say the least. Couple years ago drinking with some friends I started off the night with 2 375ml mad dogs, Banana Red and Orange Jubilee and a 375ml Green Apple Wild Irish Rose. I could always find cisco and mad dog (night train once in a while) but never thunderbird or Wild. So I jumped at this opprutunity. After pounding them in an hour, I had a hankering for more Wild so I got 2 more 375ml Green Apple Wilds and drank them down. Truth be told, initially i was feeling GrEaT, inebriated bad but felt like I was floating on a cloud. After that it was Blackout City. Supposedly I had gone to a club and got thrown out for urinating on the dance floor and then spitting at and socking the bouncer that tried throwing me out. Outside I managed to pick up a rock throw it through one of their windows. Of course this is all hear-say as I do not remember any of these incidents. What I do remember next is waking up at about 5am with vomit, some blood and I don't even want to know what else all over a very nice shirt and pair of pants on the sidewalk of a very rough inner city neighborhood. I was very lucky because I had my cell phone and a wrinkled up 20 dollar bill, so I was able to take a cab home. My hangover wasn't bad at all probably because I had walked off all my booze. I slept like I was on a NyQuil binge. I've had cisco and mad dog many times and although I've gotten wrecked, from my experience Wild Irish Rose is the true Liquid Crack. It truly is the worst tasting of the bum wine(I rank them best to worst: Mad Dog, Cisco, Night Train, Wild. Never had T-Bird)The green apple was sugary anti-freeze laced with crack in my opinion, but you will want more and more. There is some stuff in there that goes into the bloodstream and straight to the cranium. Beware....

When I was in High School some buddies literally tried to kill me (they thought it would be funny if I died - pretty much the quality of friends I had then) by feeding me bottle after bottle of Mad Dog one night. I think they chose their instrument of death poorly _ I drank several bottles, passed out (the always desired effect back then) and was up and chipper in the AM none the worse for the wear. I think it was the fact that I could never get a hangover that hatched their muderous plot - might also be why I only have a third of a liver, now.

yo, i really enjoyed reading through your website. it's about time these "bumwines" got a little publicity. i will say that of the main five, the only one i haven't drank a significant amount of is Cisco, possibly because of it's unavailability in my area. at my prime, i was actually downing 2 thunderbirds/night, at which time i had the luxury of not having a strenuous job and taking time off from college. but my main comment is that from what consider a vast experience in the bumwines, the worst hangovers i've ever experience, ALL came at the hands of Wild Irish Rose, by far. They were debilitating. Anyway, i just wanted to say that this site really gave me a laugh and i sent to several of my buds. Keep up the good work.

Wild Irish = Death.

Awesome webpage, can't wait to get to the States and try some of these beauties. Down here in Australia we have a few interesting little "bum wines", especially a exquisitly horrible sparkling wine called "Passion Pop". RRP of about 4 bucks a bottle (so around 3.20/3.50 US), this stuff doesn't have a massive alcohol by volume, but due to the fizz, it goes straight to one's head. Another of the bum/underage highschooler crossover drinks, it's sweet enough for girls and cheap enough for bums. And you get a discount if you buy it by the dozen. Man I finished a case of it once in a day, I was definatly FUBAR. Anyway, keep bummin'.

Ripple

During the time I was growing up, my dad sold wholesale beer, wine and liquor. Back in those days, things were a lot less "stigamtized" and for me obtaining liquor was not only easy, but cheap. I got the brands dad sold "wholesale".

Anyway, one line he sold for years was Gallo. This was back when Gallo wasn't making any pretense about offering "high brow" wines. Ripple was a Gallo product and back about 1970 actually came in three flavors; Red, White and "Pagan Pink". Back then, the wholesale price for Ripple was 48 cents a fifth. Now, there was a "cheap drunk" for a bunch of high school kids!
I wish I could remember the alcohol content, but I can't. I remember dad kept the three "flavors", in both pints and fifths.

Ripple sold pretty well until Gallo came out with "Boone's Farm Apple Wine" and that stuff sold like "hotcakes" for quite awhile. I remember helping dad count the Boone's Farm in the warehouse one Saturday afternoon. In those days, there was just the apple wine and it only came in fifths, so just one package to count. Anyway, there were two carloads of the stuff on the rails enroute to the warehouse that would hopefully arrive early in the week. The dilemma was were there sufficient quantity to load the first delivery trucks out of the warehouse that week.
So, I crawled over this mountain of Boone's farm and called while dad wrote.
I still remember the total. It was 984
cases! The stuff sold like beer in those early days!

This is a wine site, but just another price comparison. Back in those days I could buy a case of Falstaff beer, 12 ounce cans or non returnable bottles for $3.60!

We used to drink Old Duke and Wild Irish Rose in high school. The last time we drank it was at a party when 2 of us had a contest to see who could drink the bottle the fastest. We both chugged our entire bottles with only a couple of breaks for air. Then, because we weren't drunk at all, we decided to savor a second bottle of Old Duke each. The other guy was laying on the bathroom floor and puking in the toilet in no time. Unfortunately for him, someone else happend to be pissing in the toilet when he started puking again. Puke on the face, piss on the head. Not a good night. I did not puke, but did pass out while trying to take a dump on the same toilet with the door wide open and my pants around my ankles. The entire evening was well documented with photos. I graduated to 40 ozs after that night.

My (Canadian) friends and I went on a road trip to Seattle a few months ago, and bought a bottle of MD 20/20 to try out. We brought it all the way home (14 hours!) and took it out of the trunk, only to accidently smash it on the road. Le sigh. Now I might never taste bum wine. How sad.

My hubby came home with a bottle of Wild Irish Rose the other day. I nearly passed out from shame at the sight of it. He had NO clue that it was a wino wine. I just had to tell him. He tasted it anyways and to my horror, said it tasted GOOD! Good grief, you mean! I then looked up online all the proof I needed to show him the bummish error of his ways, THIS SITE. I asked him if he was going to sleep on a heated grate tonite. My 14 yr old asked, why can't he drink it/buy it? I replied...because it's EMBARRASSING! He had such a good laugh at this, the kind of laugh that says he's gonna buy it again. Oh well. At least we opened a nice bottle of Merlot tonight.

Rev. McGee Says Hello To His Little FriendSent to Bumwine.com on Feb. 5, 2006

Ahhhhhhhmen, brother. As a Catholic priest, and one who knows more than a little about the joys of bad wine, I bless you for this altar to the heavenly joy of Bum Wine.

The Church has been cultivating Bum Wine aficionados since The Last Supper. I personally believe the real miracle of that night was the fact that the bottle got opened despite the lack of a screw top. But, then again, he was God the Son.

I personally started to switch out the altar wine with Mad Dog shortly after I was ordained. I got a jumbo chalice shortly thereafter. As a matter of fact, one Christmas I set a new Diocesan record when I said 13 masses, heard 116 confessions, offered 2 Novenas and said a Rosary just for kicks. Working the Mad Dog into a confession is easy, but try saying a Rosary with one hand doing the ol' Dolphin squeeze on a bottle of M. David's finest. No easy feat.

Bless you all who seek the eyes of God through seeking a higher consciousness made much easier since the advent of Life's Railway to Heaven, my personal favorite, Night Train wine. God bless you and may he keep you ever in his vineyard of believers.

Father McGee

One of funniest things I ever heard is when a friend of mine said, man let's get some Thunderbird. I said what's that and he started to drool and his eyes turned dim and said...you got .59 cents? I said yeah, I gotta dollar but I'm not gonna spend it some Indian trinket. He said Thunderbird's not an Indian trinket,it's a wine man you take it home and drink it! I said it sure don't sound like wine to me and bet me change from my dollar.
So we hustled on down to the nearest U-Totem...the guy wanted my ID,I whipped it out and showed him...he went and got a green bottle from the freezen vault..my friend started doin' back flips through the cottage cheese. So we went to his place and stated chuggin down and I started thinkin' man this Thunderbird is yum yum yummy I know it's doin' good things to my tum tum tummmy...that's how you reason when you're on that crap.So I started thinkin' I'd go and see my dear sweet wife who met me at the door w/ a carving knife. She said get them damn grape peel from between your teeth. I saw we were gonna have a misunderstanding and said I'll get in touch w/ you later...she said forget it man, you're never touching me again! So I saw the light and heard the word and I'm staying away from that dirty old Thunderbird. The message came from Heaven radiant and fine and now all I drink is communion wine...6 days a week!

Im 16 now and ive been drinking MD 20/20 every friday and saturday since i was 13. Me and all my friends have a bottle each. I used to drink lambrini but it takes 2 liters to have an effect on me and it takes absolutly ages to down a 2 liter bottle. So we seen MD 20/20 in the window and though "Hmmm...like the look of that!" Now it takes me around an hour to drink a whole bottle. Sometimes its even less if i'm having a bad day. It used to be a struggle to get it because none of us could get served. But we can now so its even better! MD gets us absolutly blattered and i absolutly LOVE it ! ! ! I think i'll always drink it now. My personal favourite is the orange flavour. I have to say though that the tropical blue is abit rank. It looks like medicine... and tastes like medicine aswel !!! Peach is nice along with the srawberry. I wouldnt really recommend the kewi either ! Im sorry to say that i havent yet tasted the Bling Bling one !!!!! I hope i do one day because it looks GORGUS ! ! !

Your site is absolutely amazing. Me and my friends "Board the Night Train" every Friday night. We even have a group on facebook inspired by this wonderful beverage. I don't know how cheap these drinks typically are, but at a local grocery store Thunderbird and our beloved Night Train are sold for $1.99. I hope you add some more shitass wines to your site as soon as possible.

TKE's beta-beta chapter (NC State) probably accounted for 1/3 of Canadaigua winery's revenue from 1991 to 1995. We had this fat Indian dude in the brotherhood who wore a purple three-piece suit to ritual meetings and drank Cisco like they were closing the plant tomorrow. This was right around the time Deep Space Nine was on -- Avery Brooks' character, of course, was named Sisko, so whenever that fucking thing came on the TV someone would yell "Cisco Bitch!" like Rick James and the pouring and the chugging would begin. I've had all of the "wines" reviewed here and I can say without a doubt Cisco is a sledgehammer to the kisser. No wonder bums go blind.

Your webiste made me curious enough to try some bumwine with my buddy last Saturday. We armed ourselves with Chaser (to prevent the hangover that we were warned about) and headed down to our local ghetto grocery. I'm not a small guy, so I figured I could handle a 750 of Peach Cisco. I found I was right and liked it so much that I wandered down to the liquor store with my friend (who was drinking nightrain) and slugged down another 375 of the blue rasberry Cisco. We were drinking it at a local hole in the wall bar around the corner and had a raucous time, until we decided to leave. Somehow we got lost on the way back to my apartment (only a quarter mile) and my friend passed out in some poor yuppie's yard for a few hours. I made it home and promptly vomited, my head buzzing and pulsing in excruciating pain. The next day was so rought that the hair of the dog wasn't helping, and I kept smelling the Blue rasberry on my breath. The hangover became progressively worse throughout the day and I spent my entire Sunday under a blanket on the couch. Here it is Monday and I'm coming down with some kind of illness that's making work a horrific ordeal. In short, I got what was coming to me. Thanks, Bumwine.com!

Up here in Maine we used to drink another fine product of the Canandaigua Wine Company called "Old Duke". The Duke came in "red" and "white" but has since gone missing from our finest liquor store shelves. Sweeter than WIR and somehow more "distinctive", it was how I started my weekends in college every Wendsday night for four years. I'm on a mission to hunt down any remaining bottles, so if anyone has any leads let me know. ~Santos~

I want to tell you all about a little Night Train tradition my friends and I used to follow back in college (Penn State) - we called it Riding the Train> start with a bottle of Night Train from the freezer (please NEVER drink this stuff warm!!!) get a picture of a train (the one on the bottle will do in a pinch) put on the song "Night Train" by G&R and stand in a circle. The first person takes off the cap and drinks as much as they can stomach, then passes it to the next who does the same. The rub is that the last in line - the cabbose - has to finish it no matter what. Nothing but good clean fun as you all laugh at the cabbose chugging, then running to find a good place to hurl. For some added chalenge, ride it blind - put the bottle in a paper bag so no one can see how much is left till the end. Have fun -
Dave

At a party to celebrate my 64th birthday, a friend gifted me with a bottle of Boone's Farm Apple--something I had not tasted since my 20s. A few days later, I poured a glass. I guess tastes change over three decades. Not one to waste the better part of a bottle, I ``re-gifted'' the remaining portion--left in freezer overnight--to a homeless guy who hung out at a local lawn mower repair shop. Said he loved it.

this site is great. smartly done with a good measure of humor. PS This seems the best site to ask what exactly is Ripple and what is its history?

I cant believe that Buckfast doesnt have a mention here. In Scotland Buckfast is the staple diet of any self disrespecting Wino. There is not a single A&E dept in Scotia that hasn't patched up a tanned jaw courtesy of our nation's other national drink. God bless the Monks of Buckfast Abbey ya Bass...!

Greetings from the great white north. Up here in Soviet Canuckistan the beverage choice of bums througout Toronto isn't wine at all but a high alcohol "strong" beer called "Crest" -- or Crest "Super Premium Lager" made by the Crest Brewing Company in the U.K. There have been documentaries made about this. Bums really love it! We bring it on camping trips in the winter because it doesn't freeze and you can cut the can open with your Leatherman tool and eat it like slush. Mmm mmm good. Also note, bums don't pronounce the "t" in the name, they simply call it "Cress" and kind of slur the whole name, almost missing the beginning "C" entirely. Please review Crest for all your fans up here in Canada! Cheers!

This past Thanksgiving I bought a big jug of Wild Irish Rose because my grandma said she used to drink that because they couldnt afford anything else back in the 40s. So I got it for old time's sake. Well, she poured a glass and drank it all. After that though she looked kind of dazed and started drinking water. The real kicker is my brother drank a few glasses, (amoung other things), but I'm sure it was the Rose that got him going crazy. he was so hammered my dad had to take him home at 7pm from Thanksgiving!! HAAHAHSF:ALHKDFH!

Don't know if its been mentioned yet, cos I'm too lazy to look through the whole guestbook, but "Eldorado" is a poison to warm the hearts of those sleeping under newspapers. Bottom left of the pic here:

Being an aging wino of 61 years, I fondly remember the days in the 1960's when four guys could pile in a VW beetle, pony up 25 cents each for gas, and cruise all night while drinking a shared one-gallon jug of California's finest "Red Mountain Wine" that retailed for $1.59 a gallon. So, for under a buck each, a guy had a night's entertainment, including a horrendous drunk and a pack of Marlboros. Ahhhh... the good old days.

Hey guys! Anybody ever hear of a poison called Enzian? I was given a couple of shots of this in a bar in Munich and it nearly blew my brains out. I actually brought a few bottles back home and served shots after a dinner party. Half of the guests couldn't remember how they got home. That is powerful shit, brothers!

The Germans must really have a thing for brain damage. I remember they also take the cheapest red wine they can get and mix it with... Pepsi! Yes, Pepsi cola.

Trink Heil!

my bum wine experiences:

last year when my 11 year old brother was visiting me at college he helped me host a maddog party. we had i think 44 bottles of MD20/20, which required pretty much buying out the entire stock of maddog in eastern pa. my brother just ran around shooting people with nerf guns when they started getting wasted. md pong, md flip cup, you name it, we played it md style. i think half of the attendees vomitted. the next night i had one bottle left and was hanging out with a bunch of boys doing a power hour... so i started my power hour with the last bottle of maddog. needless to say, my 11 year old brother had to carry me across the quad back to my apartment in the snow.

then just last night i decided to host bum wine tasting because i recently discovered what i now call "the bum wine store." bought night train, three flavors of cisco, 4 kinds of wild irish, and thunderbird. none of us could even stomach thunderbird, but i will highly recommend berry flavored cisco. our problem was that we attended happy hour before bum wine tasting, so we were a little too drunk already and didn't make it through all 9 trials. oh yeah, and just in case we needed something to clear the taste, we had a bottle of andre champagne as a chaser. eight hours of drinking involving bar, bum wine tasting, and then more bars... i vomitted when i woke up. thank you bum wine.

INFORMATION: if you live in the northern va area, the bum wine store is called in and out market. it's in sterling on church street near the buffalo wing factory. i think the old asian man who works there really likes selling 9 bottles of bum wine to three college girls. he will ID you though. also, ask him to see the glass pipes behind the counter. what an experience.

BUM WINE FOREVER!

Poor old discontinued Ripple. It was the direct ancestor of today's alcopops like "Zima" or any of hard cider wannabies.
There's some crap sold mostly in Gallup New Mexico, to old Navajo drunks, called "Garden de Luxe". The label says it's made in California and the stuff tastes almost identical to Night Train.
One other amazing brew was "Red Rooster, 2000". I drank two half pints of this crapola one day and very quickly passed out. When i woke up, my head felt fine, but when i tried to get out of bed, the trouble started. I couldn't walk! It took another couple of hours to regain dexterity in my pedal extremedies and caused a nasty "will i ever be fucking normal again??" panic attack.

Red Rooster is $14.95, way out of the bum price range.

I just started working at a liquor store in August, and never having been a drinker, it's been a real education. I was glad to have found your page so that I can reccommend something new to the bums that wonder in shoeless of the street, in between peeing on the side of our building and begging me to marry them.

Me and my buddies always bought the Boones Farm as a goof to suplement our 'real' booze. At a buck fifty, we thought we were really 'slumming it'. Little did we know, we were being cheated with a low alchy content wine. After confering with this fine reference site, we will soon be moving up to the Mad Dog and Thunderbird.

Thank you,

Eric

Cisco. Man, talk about bad experiences.
As an underaged (and lightweight to boot) drinker, I had my first true drunken nausea with this swill. Simply put, I drank the shit like it was a wine cooler. It was syruppy and sweet like cough medicine but went down pretty smooth as I recall. Then it hit me, just like my buddies said it would. I felt good for about 20 minutes, laughing and carrying on and generally being drunk as all hell.
Then BOOM! The room starts spinning and I get that wave of nausea. Oh, god. I spent the rest of the evening curled in the fetal position in a spinning room trying not to vomit. I awoke the next morning in a puddle of drool and a skull that felt like it had been spiked with a claw hammer. I swore on that cisco I'd never get that tore up again. We all say that though.

Having been in the construction based temp industry for about 10 years and sending "bums" out to work, I have to agree with the majority of whats on this site. I have witnessed many a bum cashing their cash from me to buy a bottle of one of these... I have seen the damage swill like MD20/20 or Night Train will do to one of these guys!

Its SCARY!!

Friends dont let friends drink bumwines!

(Though I did let my cousin drink a bottle of MD 20/20 about 15 years ago... he thought it would be "cool" to do, then realized half through the night it was complete crap and then couldnt give it away... I taught him an important lesson that night!)
