I came across this site almost randomly and saw a classic immediately - Thunderbird. I still drink this, but in my teens used it mixed with White Lightning cider to get girls very drunk very quickly; amazing results guaranteed (works on guys too, or just to get yourself wasted cheaply. WARNING - one hell of a wicked after effect on your head)

me and sparky getting drunkYeah well. I'm in AA now but every so often (every day) I wax nostalgic about all the booze that I have drank in my life. I still think that Cisco rules. I couldn't find it here in NYC any longer so I had to schlepp to NJ to get it. Those days of drinking are long behind me but to you, my friends, I say, keep drinking, drink bum wines.

Rosie was the only bumwine I could find in my area for a long time, though this morning I finally visited a local liquor store and found Cisco... but only in Strawberry, Berry and Peach, and only in fifths.

Considering it's Unofficial St. Patrick's Day on my campus, I'm gonna take a hit. Though I fear it may be more like taking a rifled slug square to the chest in the case of this monster.

From the 1970s when I was in high school I also remember the following:
Swissup - sold in pints kind of like T-bird
Spanada - battery acid in jugs
Yago Sangria - the classic
Mateus - technically not a "bum" wine but pretty damn close!

Does anyone know where in the 5 boroughs of New York City I can purchase Bum Wines (Not Fucking Boone's Farm, which is everywhere here)?

I really don't want to go all the way to New Jersey for it.

If anyone can find where they sell it in NYC (preferably not Staten Island), then I just might purchase a bottle or two for the lucky person.

Awesome site. I run a bar and am planning an alternative to a Pimps and Ho's night. Thinking about calling it "Bums and Crackho's". We'll be bringing in quite a few samplings of these fabulous libations. I'm just getting around the site now, but I'd like to see some in depth analysis of the proper brown bag texture and density for a good bottle wrap.

Keep it up!!

I've been a fan of the site for a while, having stumbled upon it in a search for Ripple.

I was able to get my hands on Wild Irish Rose in 5ths (750ml), for less than $4 each.

Perhaps it's just the fact that my normal drinks of choice are Captain on the rocks and George Dickel, but Rosie didn't seem to hurt me that bad. The full 5th made me good and drunk, but never put me fully under.

Now... I just need to find Cisco :D

So, i was stumbling around looking for verification that the bad days and random depression/anger i was feeling may be coming from the MD20/20 and the additives/byproducts it contains.

i figured its called mad dog for a reason.

If i drink regular wines, white zin, or pinot's then i wake up bright and refreshed smiling and ready to take on the world.

i hate liqour, it fucks with my brain, so i dont drink it.

beer makes my innards clog up and swell, so i stopped drinking that.

MD 20/20 is becoming my prefered choice becuase of price lately.

but i notice that EVERY time i drink it i wake up just simply angry at the world.

like pissed off that i have to do anything, or talk to Anyone.

i dont want to do ANYTHING except what i have to and get back to my computer and my bottle of MD 20/20

after reading through this site, and reflecting on my one and only wild irish rose experience (tough times. felt like a bum. had to walk about 9 miles to shelter, in the rain, holding a bottle in a 'skirt' at 7am.)

i felt better knowing that these bumwines do have a worse effect on the brain, im usually very aware of whats going on in my head being an ex cocaine addict (among others)

I just needed verification so i can let it go when i feel that way.

if you know, thats half the battle.

i had one encounter with cisco, and never NEVER again will i consume that horrid stuff.

EXTREMELY accurate review of it though

im done rambling.

While in High School, I remember countless fights starting after drinking Cisco (which was known in our inner circle as liquid crack), especially at "hookie" parties.
While in the US Navy, one of my buddies from East Saint Louis, IL introduced me to Thunderbird and Night Train. I had to stop drinking those "reasonably-priced" wines because of the decreasing quality of the women I woke up next to.

I once knew a guy who used to chug the first half of his bottle of Cisco. Then spike the Cisco with vodka or even Everclear (grain alcohol). Then he would drink off it for much of the night. Of course this guy also would mix gin and tonic in the liter tonic bottle so when he woke up the g&t would still have fizz left in it.

We used to neck this white 'cider' called Frosty Jack's. It was very sweet and flat and I think it was about 8%. Thing is, it came in huge bottles..I think 2.5 litres and it cost about ?2.50 (about $5 at today's rate). It made one extremely aggressive and also very, very sleazy. I haven't seen it for sale in about 5 years (maybe longer) and I heard a rumour that it was causing some kind of stomach decay..Definitely bum juice, if not exactly a 'wine'.

Mad Dog's taste like melted popsicles. We'd get them in the morning during the summer along with a 30 pack of the finest Natty Light, some 40oz's and tampico (for Brass Monkeys).
I'm sure you've heard of this, but it's a favorite around here. Take a 40 oz and drink it to the label, pour in some Night Train or any cheap wine, then pour a pack of Kool Aid in. This gets a little complicated as the Kool Aid makes it foam, but you'll figure it out.
Now you have yourself a delicious "Thug Blood." Enjoy!

Have already decided that my refrigerator will always be blessed with a full bottle of the stuff from now on until I meet a decent women, in which case she will then have to get her own.

Can't wait for the evening when I have nothing better to do but consume it and try to take a walk to the park and back. If memory serves me correctly I will not remember reaching the park and will be wondering why the hell I went to bed with my boots on and where the street sign came from. Who said being a bachelor after the age of 40 wasn't fun?

The best bum wine ever was Sparkling Blue Rhapsody, marketed to Australian teenagers & twenty-somethings in the 1970s with the slogan "wine to match your jeans". It was the worst el cheapo sparkling vinegar/cat wee with blue food colouring, readily purchasable by the dozen by paupers, getting you shitfaced in a very short time & producing prodigious quantities of frothy blue vomit, a great trick at a party. A mate of mine spewed up some on a chenille bedspread, where it dried to form pleasingly blue globules resembling granulated sponge rubber. Sadly it had a marketing life of only 12 months or so, although the odd bottle turns up when people demolish substandard rental firetraps formerly used for student housing.

Ripple Bottle from EbayCool site. I found someone on Ebay selling two bottle of Ripple, seller name was "to*ni", title "RARE Discovery~Vintage~Bottle~RIP PLE~Red WINE Label~1", listed until 01-05-07. I saved a pic from the page. I guess its not as potent as others, but its the one I always heard of as legendary cheap alcohol, along with T-bird. There's a bigger picture than the one next to this post at the sale page bottom. Anyone interested may still be able to buy it if they hurry. FYI, If you cant make out the picture too well, the red label has Gold ripples at the top and bottom and just above the bottom one appears to be some bunches of grapes.

A true elixir emporiumWe scoured our town as well as the next few towns unsuccessfully. We found Cisco three towns away, but were told it was the "last of it. I'm done selling that stuff." No T-Bird? Night Train? "God no. Those days are looong gone." Four towns away when we became desperate and begged one Asian liquor store owner to point us to the good old American Classic. "OK, I be honest with you. You have go away from here. Go to where black people are. You find black people, you find Thunderbird."

We took his advice and headed on the highway straight for the nearest absolute shithole of a city: San Leandro, CA, right down the road from Oakland where we later learned three people had been killed in 12 hours that very day.* We tried a few corner bottle shops, then some carnicerias and were still disappointed. Then we came upon Town & Country LIQUOR, a huge establishment whose neon booze advertisements shone in the night like the devil's own Thunderbird-stained teeth. (As many were not working). Our optimism for this place was rewarded, as they had everything, right up front. We got one of each of the fantastic five, a purchase that earned us a knowing head shake from the Indian guys behind the counter. We took them home to sample and when they each hit our lips, given the standard set by bumwine.com, we were anything but disappointed.

The next day (New Years Eve) we went back in daylight to stock up on $50 worth and snap our proof photos to add to the "Where to Buy" section. If anyone's interested, our lucky spot in the East Bay is:

Town & Country Liquor
16211 E 14th St
San Leandro, CA 94578
(510) 276-7775

Anyhow, when we finally got around to getting trashed off the stuff we figured out pretty quick you guys weren't kidding. A bottle per person of Thunderbird and Night Train, then sharing one of Bling Bling Blue MD was one of the worst concoctions ever to brew around in my stomach. I woke up sleeping with my face on a toilet in a bathroom completely covered with red vomit goo and bits of corn dog. The sink was stopped up and filled with the stuff, which somehow made it onto the walls and into the hall. I must have slept in it at some point as my jacket and jeans had a chunky red line all down the right side, necessitating a long car ride in just my undies. Fuck man. Right now I'm on the couch in sweatpants with a case of the shivers I can't seem to shake.

But now we know for ourselves.

I was amazed on your research! My wife left it up to my Sister in law to buy a "wine of choice" SO......My "Shanty Irish" sister in law showed up at Thanksgiving dinner with a bottle of Gallo red in a 2 liter bottle, I guess she thought we were eating at the Bowery. I was amused to see that Gallo bottles a well known Bum Wine. Thanksgiving this year, gave us some stories that will last a lifetime.
Great Site!!

I once drank a bottle of Night Train (375ml) in 13.6 seconds. I think it was a dare. Apparently, (so I've been told) I didn't vomit, but much/most of the next four hours is hazy (or a blackout).

At a block party in Bellerose, NY I drank a bottle of Wild Irish Rose (375ml) (known locally as "Sick Puppies") in 14.2 seconds. I made $50 for holding it down.

In both cases, I went from a mold buzz to sheer blackout within 5 to 10 minutes. This stuff does indeed pack a punch.

Good Times. Good Times.

I recently discovered Nighttrain Express while I was on vacation in the Caribbean. Although the Shopkeeper warned me I decided to take a ride.

And it was not as bad as I thought as long as it was ice cold. But as soon as it got warm it was one of the worst things I've ever tasted.

Guess I'll have to try the Bird next.

Silver satin which is satin smooth. with an alcohol content of 19% by volume this
grape wine with natural and pure flavors
is vinted and bottled by mission bell wineries. At a price of $3.99 it cant be beat. Its best served cold but i like to drink it anyway i can get and right out of the bottle is the way to go. cold or warm dose not matter cause its going to fuck you up either way. I love the Russian look of the bottle to. This is grade A cheap, stiff, choice, bum wine bound to pickle any liver that it comes in contact with.

I always get shit from people when i buy this at the liquor store they always say that its for pickling fish. This is the best cheap wine i have ever seen and tasted. I used to get the thunderbird but they stoped stocking it and then i saw the silver satin and tryed it out and i have been drinking it ever since.

I didnt get all the way through the guestbook (for obvious reasons) but I didnt see "Lancers" mentioned. I use to have a coworker who would buy a bottle of Lancers and a "Supreme" Tombstone pizza and tell us that he was going home to have a romantic evening with his wife.....and he was serious, I shit you not. Lancers is in a funky ceramic or at least brown painted bottle and I think its from Portugal or something like that. Its taste might not be bad enough to be as memorable as Cisco, but whats extrodinairy about it is its total lack of flavor. Maybe its cheap cuz they cut cheap white table wine with sugar water? I dont know but I think it deserves a round with your reviewers or a day in the BumWine Labs.

One more horrifying libation that is so inexplicable in its constitution, color, flavor and alleged genesis one can only think it was a joke someone in the Hiram Walker factory is playing on the unknowing public. Its called "Noyeaux". Its apparantly of French origin, as in its heritage but I cant believe that the French would be responsible for such a vile liquid. The Hiram Walker variety is bright red and claims to be an "almond liquor". When a sniff test is preformed with Noyeaux next to Robitussin Red, you cannot tell the difference. More amazingly, they taste exactly the same. one must wonder if Noyeaux has a similar effect on a cough or fever because a 750ml bottle of Noyeaux costs only $11bux whereas a similar quantity of Robitussin would run your about $55, its worth a try, no?

Someone needs to explain how an almond based liquor turns out to be bright red, whats next, Raspberry Wine that is green?

DON'T DRINK ANYMORE What a great site, I can feel the rush already and don't go near any of it in years,(Sheffields is $9.99 1.5L has that sickening sweet, has to be mixed with tonic to be bearable, never again boys) the memory is enough, Brothers Strothers came over with Thunderbird (Thunder chicken)(Larry Owens put him up to it, I know) 375ml was enough and I was spinning on the couch after he left, I never touch it again. and FAT CAT with his parties in good ole Rancho Cordova, bless his heart used ta check on us who fell out to make sure we was breathing and not aspirating. what ever happened to Tyrolia and Spanata and Santa Maria jug wine could only get it near San Juan Capistrano, to name a few, very few. em were the days, boy. I'm a Chicago native and right when I first turned 21 a bartender convinced my friends and I to do a shot of Malort. Cisco, liquid crack. 18% alcohol, 82% crack. Drank a bottle before going to the laundromat when in college. Ended up trying to set the game with the claw that picks up the fuzzy animals in the corner of the laundromat on fire with a lighter, throwing random laundry around the laundromat, cursing loudly at very frightened patrons who cornered themselves behind laundry barricades to defend themselves from a raging lunatic. I was a fine upstanding citizen on liquid crack, making an irreparable reputation on the local townfolk. Cisco, liquid crack. Sold anywhere food stamps are collected.

Thinking back about my wild and crazy days some 30 years ago, I wondered what "fine perry wine" meant on the Thunderbird label, so I came across this great site! Great job, guys! In return for all of these great stories, I will share two of mine from the early seventies at the end of this.

I see many references to secret additives. Probably not! This is just cheapo unaged alcohol full of impurities, with many of them being toxic. Only a lengthy aging process in charred wooden barrels can remove them (anyone want to start making a Vintage Thuderbird?) As a seasoned drunk, one needs to know these things, along with the topic of "hangover quotient". Basically, the more complex the alcoholic beverage and the less aging it has, the higher the hangover quotient.
These bum wines had me hugging the commode on many a morning after, which made me swear to myself that I would climb from the bottom shelf and make enough money to be able to afford the good stuff. Well, I am a top shelf guy these days, oh but how I miss those carefree days that bum wines guaranteed!

My favorite one from those times was Annie Green Springs Plum Hollow, which tasted better than it's competition, Boone's Farm. This was not a true bum wine (or rot gut as I called them), but it was known as a hippie wine. Another one not mentioned was Red Lady 21. At 21% alcohol content, it was billed as the "Ace and Queen of Wines".

I once drank two whole bottles of Richard's Wild Irish Rose at a parade. Somehow, I was still able to drive my car, with my friend in the front seat as my guide. Well, I was driving down fraternity row and a jock in a Triumph Spitfire convertible pulled out in front of me. I told my buddy that I would fix his ass by turning on my high beams and blinding him in both mirrors. Somehow, my aim was still good, because this really pissed the jock off until he pulled over with his girlfriend. I pulled over and the yelling started, at which point all of the other jocks came out, basically most of that college's football team. Now I was only about 150 pounds back then, but I still called them all a bunch of wimps and threatened to kick all of their asses. Needless to say, they had me pinned to the hood of one of their cars and I was still threatening them. My friend was pleading with them, "Let him go! He is really, really drunk!". The football team members kept muttering "Yeah, we know, but he keeps threatening to kick our asses". I am not sure how it ended, but I think that they told me that my sports car jock was already gone and that I should go look for him. My friend got in the car and then jumped out about a mile away. The ding at the bottom of the car door turned up a year after I had sold my car, but on another buddie's car. Legendary stories never die!

The second story involves Mad Dog. About a half dozen of us wanted to get loaded very quickly and then play a game one night out in the yard. We had two items: an ice cold bottle of Mad Dog and a hash pipe. The deal was that each item would rotate around our circle in opposite directions. In order to be allowed a hit on the hash pipe, one had to put air bubbles into the bottle of Mad Dog, as in guzzle it. Two of us had sick grins on our faces and one of the others shuddered in fear for what was coming. In two rounds, both of the items were finished and we were READY!!! The dumbest one in the group asked who wanted to go first, so I suggested that we save the best for last, which was me. Well, this fool held out his arms and I put one hand on each of his wrists as he faced me. The others all backed up and gave us plenty of room. I then began to swing him around for several turns. Woosh, woosh, woosh, then let go and, SPLAT!... against the house!
He slowly got up and the next fool went flying, but didn't hit the house quite as hard. By the time it was my turn, I fell short of the house and hit the grass (smart move to go last). Well, our first guinea pig had a pricelss quote the next day, "Why am I full of bruises?" None of us felt a thing that night before. The first fool only lived to be 43 years old.I can't recommend playing this game, but it was fun while it lasted.

Thank you for this hillarious memory lane trip! I used to liberate a bottle or two of Annie Green Springs Strawberry Hill wine from my uncle's stash in the garage. He bought it by the case. We would skip High School and take our booty to the SW 9th street bridge over the Raccoon River in Des Moines, climb the bridge trusses and drink till we passed out. The passing cars overhead would make make a pleasant humming sound that I can still hear. Ah, memories.

When I was a young man in Colorado, my friend Mondo (RIP) ate a big ass bowl of Fruity Pebbles cereal and then drank a shit load of Green flavor MD 20/20 and then puked it down a slide in the park across the street rom the alley we were drinking in. It was like day-glo toxic waste slippin' down the slide. EPIC!

Man, one time when I was 18, I drank a bottle and a half of Cisco in a few hours while cruising the streets of Buffalo. Boy did it taste so good. How could a beverage this tasty be alcoholic? Needless to say, what ensued the next day could only be described as pure hell. I also like the line in The Blues Brothers when Jake says "...that Nighttrain's a mean wine..."

Having worked at a Liquor Store, in a "scenic" part of town for a couple of years this site feels like home.

From my experience..nothing satisfies the rock bottom bum like The Bird and Cisco is for highschool kids looking to get drunk.

But for the upwardly mobile alcoholic, or the parolee looking to impress his lady...It's gotta be the Boones Strawberry Hill. As one of the mayors of Crack Alley told me one.."hey man..thank you and your partner for turning me onto that Boones..my fuckin old lady love that shit" High praise indeed.

When we were kids we would hide a stolen bottle of MD 20/20 in a wood pile and would drink it before we went "snowballing" (hitting cars with snowballs)

Stuff would never freeze no matter how cold it got in Toledo, Ohio.

Ah, the memories..

A friend suggested we try "Blood Juice" the other night, something he found online. Blood juice is a bottle of Old English, a bottle of Night Train, and a packet of cherry Koolaid. We mixed up a double batch and proceeded to drink it...
It was by far one of the most foul tasting things I've ever put in my mouth, the amount of alcohol was unbelievable, and I was hungover for about 24 hours afterwards. I strongly suggest that no one tries Blood Juice ever.

As a Life long Arkansan, I've tried them all starting in grade school with the Night Train and getting out of the bum wine scene in College with the Cisco. They all have a special place in my heart and countless memories or lack thereof. but anyway I enjoyed this site.
I actually have a real job now and some money, so I don't frequent the cheap wine section any longer, but we are thinking of having a bum wine party soon.

Richard's Wild Irish Rose also comes in a white that is less tasty than the red. Regular Mogen David is a slightly pricier Bum Wine that is much tastier than the 20/20 version. I prefer the blackberry flavor. Mogen David blackberry also has the distinction of coming in a gallon jug for the fortunate days during the holidays when ones hat gets full of dollars rather than quarters. It is tough to transport in the gallon jug so it is best to live behind the dumpster at the liquor store to enjoy this one.

I worked in London in the 1980s. Went to a party of office workers one night and was propositioned in the most genteel way possible: "Would you care for a glass of Thunderbird?" I just about crapped my pants laughing but managed to tell them that you don't drink T-bird from a glass. Apparently it was a thing at the time, they had no idea.

It is harsh. Prince must have been way fucked up to write that song about this stuff...

Once, I drank some Richard's Wild Irish Rose Wine (WHITE)...Stay away from that shit. Was the worst shit I ever tasted since McEwan's Scotch Ale...

My favorite is Brotherhood May Wine, which should be listed as a Bum Wine, but somehow isn't..

i ran across "silver satin" this evening and was quite sad it isnt listed on your glorious webspace.
19% abv, made of "grape wine and natural pure flavors".
3.99 for a fifth.
tastes sort of like vermouth with a hint of satans fiery wrath....and also rubbing alcohol with half a q-tip left in by mistake.
thought id make you aware.

I think I know where you can get another picture of "Ripple". In the movie "Creepshow" by Stephen King, there is a scene in the story "The lonesome death of Jordy Verrill" King, who plays the roll of Verrill can be seen drinking a bottle of "Ripple". I can't be sure of this, as I no longer own the movie, but it might be worth checking out.
