hey guys i have a new wine for ya'll to try. i don't know how you would get it over in america though. it's called hock, named for the region in germany where it's from (also for the sound you make after tasting the stuff). my mate and I lived on that stuff for a whole 3 months and now neither of us have any memory of them, I'm not kidding. I asked some bums about it and they had all tried it and they all said that they "wouldn't touch that shit with a barge pole." this is wine that even bums can't drink! it goes for about ?3.15 which makes it the cheapest wine i've found in ireland. If you don't puke the first time you drink this stuff, try again as the anti-freeze flavour vaires from bottle to bottle as does the percentage, I think what it says on the bottle is the minimum percentage so don't worry. here's a url so you know the right one as I think there are different wines with the same name.

have fun!

We get Night Train here in Washington state. Nasty stuff. I took what leftovers I had from my Bumwine party and sprayed around my foundation for ants. Worked pretty good.

Night Train isn't the only one of these fine classics to have a song named after it...Billy Joe Shaver back in '73 had a song called "When The Word Was Thunderbird"!.. my favorite line is about some damn fool putting $1.29 on a jug of Thunderbird wine..CLASSIC!

Night Train isn't nearly as bad as you guys portray it. I tried a bottle of it for the first time every last week. It was only the other month that I learned that the Guns N' Roses song of the same name was about an actual brand of wine.
To me Night Train tasted like wine mixed with vodka & sugar. Given that I drank the whole 750ml bottle within about 15 minutes it couldn't have been too bad. IMO it tastes better than some mainstream "table wines" like Carlo Rossi that come in a 4 liter jug.
It's some potent stuff. I had to go to bed after drinking it as I was so tired. When I got up from bed to pee I walked into the bathroom and fell backwards into the bathtub -- Night Train will litterally knock you on your ass. After getting back on my feet, peeing, and then going back to be for a few more hours I got up. I had slept for about 5 hours.
It will, as the song says get you "loaded like a freight train" and all for $2.99.

Love this site! Recommend this site to everone! Due to the info on this site I purchased some Cisco this past summer. Think it was "Punch" or "Fruit" flavored although I cannot remember now. Consensus of those that tired it was that the stuff was and I quote "foul". Reminded me of fruit flavored Vicks Formula 44. Put it in the freezer for a hour or so which typically kills any bad taste. Didn't even faze the flavor and just made it cold. Still foul tasting. Couldn't drink anymore of it but then again I'm not a bum and I respect my stomach as well as my liver, my brain, my....
Can't wait to try the others.

Hi, boys. Great site. This reminds me of my first trip to Germany. I was horrified to see that the bums hanging around the Munich train station were drinking Cisco... mixed with Pepsi! Jesus! Can you imagine how that would blow your brains out. Hmmm. I think I've just stumbled on to the real reason the -SPAMMER- lost the war...

During this time of year, it has become a tradition for me and the wife to load up the Pacer with a selection of fine wines and hand them out personally near one of the local missions. I can assure you that the Night Train always goes first. It still gives me a lump in my throat to see a grown bum's droopy, bloodshot eyes light up when he first lays eyes on that plethera of fermented nectar. Our kids are all grown now, but it's similar to the Christmas morning experience we used to enjoy when they were young...........with an added funky smell and ragged, dirty clothes. I think it's nice for these prime examples of life's best losers to be allowed at least one good no-strings-attached, leave-the-remnants-of-your-c onscience-in-the-gutter drunk every year, and I'm proud to be able to present that opportunity to these folks.
Happy Holidays to all!!!!

I think you need to review some of the great canadian Classics Kellys, Great White, and Golden Nut
Kelly's is my personal favorite but after a tragic and pathetic binge, i no longer can drink any red wines, and certain types of grape juice without instantly throwing up. it comes in 1 and 1.5 litres, immitation irish wine.If you review this wine, Be warned that it will make you piss and shit red,i don't know if its blood or your body rejecting this putrid wine
Great white is refferd to as the white wine version of kellys, its so sugary i have accually woke up having diabetic seizures, they say there is a fight and a puke in every bottle. They are right, the golden rule with Great White is put it in the freezer 20 minuits before you drink it, and drink it quick.
Golden Nut is a red wine with a hing of Walnuts , yes wallnuts!, every wine lovers dream really, it comes in 1 litre plastic pop bottles, this is so when your shitfaced off your ass swearing naked and vomiting on people, you don't break it when you drop it, bums really like this feature, as do i, becasue when you drink "The Nut" as the punks around ehre call it, you will drop it.
I haven't encounterd a cheap bum wine in canada yet that doesn't have a 20% alcohol volume.
Cheers

The Night Train review failed to mention that Night Train is the only of these fine wines to have a song named after it and be featured in one of the all-time classic movies....
Guns 'n Roses celebrated this classic wine with the awesome song "Night Train"!
John Belushi polished off a bottle just before the final chase of "Blues Brothers" "That Night Train is some mean shit!"
From 1991 to 1994 there was hard partying student orgagnization at Michigan Tech University called "Night Train"! This was a campus leading organization devoted to the fundamentals of college partying!
Protocol for every ten+ keg, 300+ person party: at 2:00am about 3 dozen bottles of Night Train were thrown into the crowd as G'nR's "Night Train" was pumped through the concert sound system. The party never lasted too long after that... Everyone was fuuuuuuuuucked up! NTE 4 ever!

yes i would have to agree with my fellow buckfast enthusiast Patrick, buckfast is certainly a potent beverage and a delightful treat at 6am on a saturday morning when your a little worse for wear after a night out at the local disco or dance club. however when buying a bottle from your local corner store make sure you get a bottle between numbers 1 - 10 as they are the most scrumptious of vintages, anything above that then your just a scaff.

I have seen an Aussie friend who can hold his liquor (and I'm talking a litre bottle of Jack Daniels without a problem here) drink both Night Train AND Wild Irish...and it was not pretty. The Night Train turned him into an alternate universe version of himself...sweating, unable to stand, unable to urinate, violent, grouchy, and incoherent. The Wild Irish made him sleep better than he has in months, I believe. Overall, these things are nasty. After 3 days, the effects of a half a glass of Night Train were still wearing off, and I'm glad you warn of the rest of the wines' effects...he's afraid of Thunderbird at the very least. XD

Buckfast---Its the weirdest bumwine cos its made by monks in sunny devon, England, but drunk by tramps and pissheads in glasgow and scotland--and scottish tramps are fierce!
Over here in England the pisshead drink of choice used to be Carlsberg Special Brew- there were loads of 'Brew Crews' up and down the punk landscape, then there came Tenants super, Kestrel, all the cheap super strength lagers. Now its the age of the super cheap, super strength white ciders.
Tasting and acting just like paint stripper brands such as 'white lightning are the pissheads drink of choice.
Incidentally, Its very hard to find red thunderbird over here anymore, just the blue label, where's it gone i ask?
Love the site, brilliant!
Cheers, Nick

being from scotland, i can assure you that buckfast is a potent brew, which does everything other than get you 'dopey' as your report suggests. this stuff is rocket feul, full of caffeine. granted ?5.99 is expensive, but remember, we live in an expensive country, and a full bottle of buck is worth every penny. this stuff is rough, but once you get past the first 1/4 bottle you're 'buds are numb and you're way past caring. it's more of a 'special occasion' kind of bum wine, you should try it.

Is everyone aware that it is International Mad Dog Weekend? Look on your calandar. The weekend allows us to drink MD 25 hours a day. The only time of the year this can be done. Most people who refuse to observe this holiday will call it the end of daylight savings time. So get your bottle of Mad Dog and Fall Back. I is that fall down?

As a cheap and poor college student, I'll drink pretty much anything that won't make me blind as long as it is cheap and will get me drunk. I stumbled upon this page by accident and laughed my head off at the commentary. I had heard of these wines before but never really thought to try any. After I read this site I went out to go find a couple of the wines featured here.
At the closest liquor store they only sold regular Wild Irish Rose, and being lazy it was the only one of the wines I decided to buy. Good thing I didn't waste my money. I tried it, and man is it nasty. It's as if they mixed sugar, fake fruit juice, syrup, varnish, paint stripper, and vodka all into a bottle and labeled it and sold it.
I've had some awful alcohol in my day, and this stuff sits right up there with Old Rasputin and Jose Cuervo. I actually couldn't finish the bottle, there's still 1/3rd left, and I don't plan on touching it anytime soon. Maybe I'll use it to bait snail traps... or repel them altogether. Thanks for the great website though!

Somebody should market a "Bum Wines of the World" gift box with a varietal selection of Night Train, T-Bird, Cisco, MD 20/20 and Irish Rose!

Love the site. A friend of mine is in the 'States and insisted on having a night drinking T-bird. I haven't heard from her for over a week!
Buckfast, or Bucky as it's known locally, is mainly drank in and around the central belt of Scotland. Send your investigator there and he will find empty bottles littered around all the typical bum hangouts.

I remember in the 80's when one could buy 'Purple Passion' in a two liter plastic bottle - it was dirt cheap, very, very kool-aid grape, and proudly displayed the words 'made from substandard grapes' on the label.
Now that was Bumwine goodness

Love the site. I just wanted to turn you guys on to some of Nashville's finest.
While stumbling about down town, I happened across several bums sleeping on a steam vent. It was February. In between two particular bums was a jug of Carlo Rossi. I believe it was the Chablis.
I know, it isn't exactly a bum wine because of the cost but, when two or more bums decide to "live it up" they combine their funds, sell some plasma, and get some Carlo Rossi.

You guys have to check out some of the fine fare we have up here in Canada. In Ontario, the government controls liquor sales, so www.lcbo.com lists 20 bum wines (search for "fortified wines" made in Ontario).... COMPLETE WITH DEAD SERIOUS TASTING NOTES AND SERVING SUGGESTIONS!!!! HAHAHA
My personal faves are "Golden Cream" (ahem) and "Cartier Imperial" which they suggest be served at *weddings*.

Having spent the last three days filming the slums of skid row LA for a docu entitled: Forgotten Filth. I've fully come in contact with a variety of mind bending substances widely available to send one's mind back to its nascent state. From what I discovered, the ultimate cocktail appears to be the combination of what follows: warm dollar store wine; cold, cheap ice beer; and a paint rag to huff and come down off of the crack high. Effective it seems to erase even a creditor's hard-drive memory. But what I must add that Bum wine drinkers are not brand loyal, rather they are loyal to the price. The ultimate bum wine is on the shelves of every dollar store in Southern California, and the aftermath behind the store speaks loudly.

Back in the 70's we found a wine called Red Rooster "21" a peach wine that was 1% more than MD20/20 it also had a saying tha it was the wine of the 21st century as MadDog was the wine of the century! Also it was called on the bottle the Kickin' Chicken! Anybody remember?

Here's yet another drink which deserves it's just due: Muskatel. You'll find many an Evan's Family tribulation as well as jubilation accompanied by this alternative to furniture polish. "Ain't we lucky we got 'em...GOOD TIMES!" Putting Cabrini Green on the map, another fine beverage from the vintage cellars of urban decay!!

I live in Alabama and have tried three og your featured bum wines thunderbird, Wild Irish Rose, and MD20/20. And thunderbird is without a doubt the most fould tasting stuff I have ever drank it is distgusting and I would never drink it even though it's $2.29 a bottle down here. MD20/20 is the total opposite it's $3.00 a bottle taste's good and didn't get me drunk. Wild Irish Rose is without a doubt my favorite bumwine. It's $3.00 a bottle, tastes awful, and it gets me drunk. Me and my best friend started a tradition called Wild Irish Wednesday. where we each drink a bootle and see who can finish fastest. We've done this for so long we have all our friends drinking the stuff now too. Recently we got a hold of the Green Apple flavor which is without a doubt the best flavor.

My roommate, a drunk wino, just got a bottle of SILVER SATIN wine from the liquor store 19% alcohol by volume, for $1.99, and very cheap! Made in Lake Alfred Florida. It is a mean Bum wine, and like Thunderbird or Wild Irish Rose platinum in taste, with Kool Aid, you can make School boy scotch with it. It says Satin smooth on the bottle.

There's a bar here in Lincoln, NE that gives out free shots as part of a Monday Night Football promotion. The stuff they give out is the worst tasting swill I've ever had. I am now fairly certain that its T-Bird. Ugh.
My buddy and I have a new tradition for football game. We get a bottle of Night Train, listen to the Guns 'N Roses song, Night Train, and carry our wood train whistles with us. It's a hoot. Funny, I didn't know the song was about booze back in junior high. No wonder my parents didn't like rock music.

Hi, folks. Thanks for the website, it's a riot. I must confess, though, I am not a bum. I have no wish to be a bum. Similarly, I am in no major hurry to try any of that stuff listed here. The humor in your descriptions is intoxicating enough.
Major bummer that you haven't found any Ripple, though. Hope your search for it shows success.

This site is great. Me and my mate have been fans for a while, and have long wanted to sample some of these wines for ourselves. until about 11.30pm last night however, we didnt believe we could realise this dream as we thought these "beverages" were a treat only for u in america. BUT, then, i noticed a couple of bottles of Mad Dog on her shelves! Turns out that these at least have become available in the UK. i immediately rang my drinking buddy to tell him the happy news. im gona have to go up to see him at uni with a bit of Mad Dog now to put ur reviews to the test! I can comment however, that the taste, even of the tropically flavoured variety, is indeed awful.
this site has een an inspiration, and will very probably lead to 2 things. 1) a destructive rampage throughout town wen we drink the stuff, and
2)Me and him both becoming bums
Cheers guys!

Field notes on my re-acquaintance with Thunderbird (see previous post):
I notice that the basic "stuff" they use for fermenting this foul concoction varies. Now it's "citrus wine with flavors," in the past, I recall that it was "peary wine," or "grape and citrus wine." Whatever they add to it must pretty much kill the taste of what they started with.
It didn't turn my mouth black, like your review said, but it kicked my butt (and I can kill a 6-pack of stout European beer without feeling inebriated). A giddy dizzyness kicked in about half-way through the 750 ml, I picked up my axe and tried to jam a bit, but was so paralyzed I couldn't play.
About 3/4 of the way through, I decided that I had better sleep it off a bit before going out, but I ended up staring at the cieling in a semi-comatose state. I got back up and finished the bottle, and against my better judgement, I proceeded to a party to which I had been invited by my boss.
Though I sipped O'Douls throughout the night, I seemed to be getting more and more buzzed, and I sincerly hope that most of the folks there were at least half as swacked as I was, otherwise I might have some serious face-saving to do when I get back to work.
I woke this morning with a hangover that sent me, for the first time ever, to those websights that tell you how to commit suicide painlessly. Luckily, potassium cyanide isn't readily available around here.
It's mid-afternoon, and I seem to have stabalized with the help of a few PBRs.

been a hobo for quite awhile now. how did i happen to stumble upon a computer? i smashed open a library window with an empty bottle. i have been drinking since i can remember. which sadly isnt too long ago, due in fact to the alcohol causing me to loose a loot of my memoory. anyhow back to the love of my life...cheap booze. makes ugly people attractive and attractive people issue me restraining orders. which reminds me i gotta get out of here soon. lousy attractive old librarians, plus court call at 8am. ill keep it short and sweet, like king cobra. adults, lock up your booze from the youngsters! and youngsters, the adults usually hide the key in their hand because they are passed out from drinking the cheap booze they are forced to get because you have to go to fancy schamncy school. drop out get it over with. daddy was a drunk and chances are you will be too! start drinking now, in quantity. life is short, drink hard liquer and chase that with malt liquer and gargle with ripple.
your friend on the corner,

MD 20/20 Tropical is the bomb. I have $50 bottles of Patron tequila and a discriminating pallete for wine. However, when I want to get drunk fast and not spend a fortune doing it, I turn to the dog.
2 of the 375ml bottles will get me in another world. And believe it or not if I drink a few glasses of water with an advil before I pass out, I wake up with no hang over. I've never hurled the dog either. I recommend serving it cold and try to drain the entire bottle in one gulp, followed by Cheddar chex mix or something salty. Wait for your stomach to stabalize and then do the 2nd bottle. Garaunteed party time.

If you are already a tribe member, you are very encouraged to join our tribe (search tribes under "For the Love of Cisco"), and if you are not a tribe member, you should become one. We look forward to sharing our fondest Cisco drinking stories, pictures, and cocktail recipes with you!

At one time or another between 1982 and 1974, mopst of these horrors passed over my palate. T-Bird was the most devestating. As to the hardest to keep down, that would be a "toss-up" between Pear Ripple, TJ Swan and some warm retsina I tried for breakfast in Greece, once.

I used to work in a 7-11 type mini-market called "Min-a-Mart, and if they are still in business, you can find a bottle of Ripple in the Min-A-Mart in downtown Lansing, MI.
What I noticed most about bum wines was how it affected the hopes of the average bum when playing his lotto numbers!

I first tried the Dog when I was 17 years old. It was a drizzly day in the fall...cold, like when you waited as a little kid for the bus to pick you up in the winter but then the snow plow would creep up on you and blast you with snow. My buddy had a bottle of Lightning Creek, it was clear and I took a pull. Soon after I had this warm feeling come over me. The Dog had bitten me and continued to bite me long after that night. I soon went on to the Grape and dabbled with Kiwi Lime, but the Grape was the best. Dollar for dollar it's the best way to get blasted. The dog done treat you right.
