Favorite: St. Ides |
Although it may not meet the traditional definition of wine, the flavored varieties of St. Ides are enormously favorable with bums. I beg you to consider St. Ides, as no evaluation of bum wines is complete without it. I?ve only heard of one person drinking more than one St. Ides. It was my uncle Carl at his mothers wake. He ended the evening by climbing in the pine box with the old hag. Good times.

It is imperative that the MD 20/20 write up include that for those truly in the know refer to the "MD" as "Mother's Dick". Yeah, let that sink in and you see its the Truth with a capital "T".

Has anyone heard of Old Judge? I heard ads for it on WNJR as a teenager, but I never actually saw it in a store.
I liked the Sanford & Son clip, but I would have enjoyed the one where Fred describes his favorite mixed drink, Champipple, a blend of champagne & Ripple.
I once coached a youth soccer team that I named The Thunderbirds. The kids were 9-10 years old. I'd pull them in before the half and say "What's the word" and the kids would yell "Thunderbird". Some of the parents would finish it under their breath.

Favorite: MD 20/20 or Cisco |
I moved up here outside of Klamath Falls, Southern Oregon, about 2 1/2 years ago (I bought a cheap, but nice house for $60K - try doing that in the SF Bay Area ! Forget it !)
It's nice up here, but there's no gay people AT ALL. A lotta rednecks and blue-collar types, and I having a DEVIL OF A TIME trying to get even a cheap minimum wage job (which here is $8.00 now). Small town prejudices, lots of beautiful natural scenery, and so I drink. I only drink periodically, since I'm on food stamps (as are my roommates). We're "just getting by", and we often drink Hood River Vodka, but this cheap-ass MD 20/20 or Cisco works as well. They even sell MD 20/20 at our local Albertson's (along with Thunderbird and Nighttrain). It's a poor area up here, although ironically a lot of equity-rich Califorians are moving up here now, buying $200 - $300K homes (half the price of the Bay Area). I'm not a drunk, so want the occasion BUZZ. And that's what you get for $1.59 (small Cisco) or $3.00 MD 20/20 (sold in a poorer part of town, Mom 'n' Pop stores on Main Street East).
Cheers ! California is NOT PARADISE ANYMORE, unless you have Big $$$$'s !!!

Favorite: Ripple |
Ripple was one of my favorite "low rider" party wines of way back when. It tasted like a sweet fortified kool-aid, and came in various flavors, such as Pagan Pink, Pear, etc. It was probably a %9 or %11 like Boones Farm, but the hazard was...it was so easy to chug.
MD 20/20 is just good for one thing....going into a coma (if you don't get into a fight first, or commit some felony)and of course, the notorious 2 day hangover.
Back in my freight train days, there were three BumWines of choice; Red Port, White Port and the ghastly Thunderbird. Yes, even back in the 70's we knew Thunderbird wasn't even a real wine, but some fortified flavored concoction.
Rumor amongst the winos was that Red Port destroyed your liver, but the White Port destroyed the brain cells. There were sufficient wet brains (hydrocephalics) stumbling around as living cautionary tales.
You haven't lived until you been to a Thunderbird party, with a fire (made of wood pallets) roaring, and 10 or 20 others getting equally mental.
Nothing like the local PD coming in to bust the party up, and the FD coming with their pumper truck to extinguish the light of the night.
And of course, you haven't lived until you seen the green mountains behind the homes in New Mexico, Oklahoma and South Dakota Reservations. Beautiful mountains of broken green glass from a lifetime of Thunderbird consumption. Usually surrounded by plastic bags filled with dry gold paint from...well, those of us who know, KNOW!
But the truth of BumWines is that there are chemical properties which affect the psyche beyond simple grain alcohol concoctions. It led to speculation of genocide of the destitute. But the point is moot, because of all my party friends from back in the day, only I survive to tell the tale.
After all these years, I found some MD 20/20 at the local market, and on impulse I picked up a bottle. After a 6 oz glass....I am experiencing a flush reaction, and that bottle is headed for the sink to poison the fishes.
RIP T.A.B.A.D.

Hmmmmmmm ... Where do I start. Well strange that I am here being that I saw my father drink himself to death with T-bird, and MD. But anyway right now im 1/2 way into a pint of grape md. And its really sort of relaxing. Name it ive drank it. In the Navy, been to 26 different countries and fully endulged in the booze. Cisco red, Drove my 4 runner into the lake at around 8am. MD 20/20 drove my friends bronco into a house. did not wake up untill the next morning when the owner who was a drunk mexican who liven in the house that his boss let him live in beat on the door and woke us up. only to go to the gas station and buy...... yep boones farm. thats the hardest wine you could get at a gas station in Jacksonville. Oh and about 15 years ago I was on my girlfriends roof. dont ask how I got there but A fifth of cisco later I fell off into the bushes and onto a chunck of concrete face first. Bad Bad night...
Hope my review of these fine beverages helps the next person make a good choice on their next purchase. Hoorah!!

Tried night train for the first time during this years first all black coached superbowl. Now I know why the brothers all like this stuff. What a rush. Doesn't taste to bad after some Colt 45 and followed by a Swisher sweet cigar. Multiculturalism at its finest thanks NFL why isn't this stuff advertised during the superbowl. One quart bottle of Colt 45 the official beer of the Indianapolis Colts gives you the buzz of a gallon of Budweiser at one tenth the cost.

I am a big fan of cheap alcohol. I am a recovering alcoholic and my drink of choice was HeavenHill whiskey. I ususally drank a half-gallon every 5 days(a 1/2 gallon costs around 15-20dollars) I especially love MD 20/20 I use to drink a bottle everyday and I loved the drunk feeling it feels alot different that HeavenHill. When I get off my ANTABUSE I am gonna get a Half-Gallon of HeavenHill and a big bottle of MadDog 20/20. Favorite: Night Train |
Back around 1987, myself and a few friends found a discarded Thunderbird bottle under an overpass while changing a flat tire on the edge of town. My brother had the fantastic idea to piss in it and leave it for one of the old winos that frequently stumble down the shoulder of Route 20. Lacking anything better to do, we hung out in the truck about 100 yards away and watched. Sure enough, about two hours later this old drunk fuck that used to hang out in front of the furniture store and shout obscenities at his wang wanders by and downs the whole thing in less than a minute, and it was probably still warm.
I've never actually tried Thunderbird myself , but I have been run over at full steam by the Night Train a few times, the third time I tried it I woke up half naked in the JC Penney parking lot and thought I was Michael Jackson, I don't even remember the first two times. That stuff is kickin', its easy to see why a man hopped up on that high octane liquid lightning would suspect his own wang of conspiring against him. It tasted awful, that piss was likely the best tasting thing he's had in years. I also tried Cisco Green Apple once, which looks, tastes, and smells like Simple Green cut with denatured alcohol and reactor coolant. I have to imagine Cisco Strawberry was what the Beatles were on when they wrote "Strawberry Fields Forever". Don't mix it with sour gummy peach rings if you value your carpet.
(As a side note, you can now buy pint bottles of Boone's Farm for $2.47, 750ml bottles of Manischewitz for $2.67 and four packs of Gallo singles for less than $4.00 at any Wal-Mart Supercenter, including ours which ironically is now located on the same spot we parked at back in '87. Rite-Aid stores usually carry Wild I, Night Train and Mad Dog for less than $3 You used to be able to get T-Bird at Phar-Mor but they went out of business in '97.)

Wal-Mart is now selling bum wine. Gallo Vineyards is now marketing it's cheap wine to the retail giant and should, have you seen how much poor white trash shops this place. This time they weren't shy about putting their name on the bottle. In fact the wine itself is called Gallo and comes in Dry Vermouth and Sweet Red I belive. The price is around $3.00 and some change and has a 16% alcohol volume. I just have a feeling that these two gasoline filled bottles are a newer rendition of Thunderbird and Night Train, not only did they actually take credit for this stuff but named it after them too... in order get it out of the ghetto and into a more mainstream marketplace. I just have a feeling that this is Thunderbird and Night Train, look at the bottles and use logic folks. It's them just with a different name.

Got myself a 1.5L of Wild I 18% red to reward myself for academic successes, and hell, out of curiosity.
I'm ~120lb and I have maybe a few sips every few months, but 3/4 through the bottle I still feel great. Completely lucid, memory intact for the most part. Mogen David 18% red ain't too bad either.
The stuff's killer, I can't really fault it in any area 'cept taste. But really I've only ever drank wine from the bottle and lukewarm, so.. yeah.
Still have yet to track down Thunderbird, Cisco, and Night Train. But I'm trying!

Hi again, I survived the holidays & didn't fall off the wagon but did see some real stumblers sucking on short dogs of MD20-20 & staggering past mumbling about things. I went to the liquor store & got a few 375 ml bottles of Mad Dog put them the next block over so they would find them & think Santa was looking out for them. I can remember as a kid working on farms that had migrant camps & they all liked "T-Boid" & "Rosie" & had to have a burn barrel to warm up on before work & after. I had to clean out the camp after they left & we got 3 dump truck loads of empties to get rid of as well as beer bottles. I think they drank most of their pay up. I wish I had some of the bottles because they had Twister & Red Rooster & Ripple too. Of course I used a shovel to load them because there were so many!!! See you soon. Chief

I've always been partial to Night Train. Whern we're talkin' business about getting trashed leaving a scene of flaming wreckage and debris nothing says it more than a wine with a picture of a Diesel Locomotive on the label.
It just don't get no better.

Hi there was wondering if anyone could help me. I live in the UK and I am trying to get a hold of a bottle of thunderbird wine. This is a present for my boyfriend he mentioned that he would like to try it after hearing it in a song and thought I would try and get a hold of it but it is not sold over here. Does anyone know of anyway I could get my hands on a bottle I have tried some USA sites but they dont deliver here. Any suggestions i would be greatful Cheers

Favorite: MD 20/20 WHITE |
I was a MD 20/20 enthusiast in High School--but don't EVER mix it with WEEd and then attempt a MIDNIGHT MOVIE of Night of the Living Dead! Somebody had pre-puked the seat I chose( at least I HOPE that was the case), but since my senses were DULLED I SAT in it; long story short--guess who ended up in the DRUNK TANK that night?
But MD 20/20 WHITE fueled a very pleasant Jethro Tull concert experience--it mixes well with low-grade ACID strangely enough...

This site is hilarious! Keep up the good work and let's give righteous praise the under appreciated bum wines.
Quick Mad Dog story...in the days of my youth (college) the guy across the hall, all of 140 lbs., decided to grab a bottle of MD 20/20 on a Saturday night. To say the least, he was a novice drinker. No food service on the weekends means we had to fend for ourselves. In his case it meant Spaghetti O's for dinner. Bad choice. Soon thereafter he hits the Dog hard. Worse choice. Well the dog bit back with a vengance and shortly after he was praising the porcelain God...several times. Legend has it he never drank again for the rest of the semester. The result...Dean's List and a lucrative career all thanks to Mad Dog.

This store had Thunderbird too. I've never had that yet, but I'm gonna have to try it the next time I feel like a 2 day hangover.

Ahh I remember back in the winter of 97 when I was living in the local ghetto with some friends in a nasty apartment right next to a crackhouse we used to get the grape MD 20/20 on a regular basis. One night I finished about two bottles of it and helped smoke a blunt. It has sort of a delayed effect,I felt good about thirty minutes then had to rush to the filthy bathroom and vomit about five times afterwards laying down in it for fuck knows how long.I then came out and drank some more and ended up trying to put my hand up my friends girlfriend's panties.Ahhh the memories of that disgusting, burning grape taste.

I was overjoyed to read tell of Noblemans down there. I am a student at Bangor University, North Wales, although born and bred in London, and I regularly get through 2 bottles of the stuff. In my local Lidl (a dangerously convenient 30 second walk from my front door) we in fact have THREE varietys, Pale and Full cream as stated, and Medium Cream, which as far as I can tell is a 50/50 mixture of the two. I am a Full Cream man myself.

Like most of the experiences I have read here I have only one story about the true ghetto wine. I have sipped MD and rode the night train many a time, but the Cisco Kid put me under the first time I drank it. I had been drinking and was saving a bottle. I drank it down and withing five minutes I was trying to catch my forcible projectile vomiting as I ran to the kitchen sink. I proceeded to spin and lost any ability other than to crawl. I then fell asleep and puked in my sleep, not good. Lastly I wet myself. I have never felt worse than the next day. As I said, I have NEVER and will NEVER drink that shit again.
An interesting side note, the band SUBLIME has a song called the CISCO kid which is named after this famous drank.
It is on the Robbin' the Hood album.

Favorite: Buckfast Tonic Wine! |
Many debate the popularity of the Almighty Buckfast, but hear ye this - In Scotland it happens to be by far the cheapest alchohol that doesn't taste like turps mixed with piss and apple juice (aka white cider). To go any lower in price results in the purchasing of the aforementioned white cider ("skeg", cheaper than water as stated in the headline of a metro paper you get on the bus in my area) or the demonically infamous Nobleman's Fortified Wine. This comes from the Lidl (a superstore chain selling cheap foreign products) and costs around ?2 for 750ml at 18% volume. It comes in a "Pale Cream" variety, which frankly tastes like urine and golden syrup, possibly why it is golden in colour and a "Full Cream" variety, which is red in colour but tastes closer to cheap cider and vodka than red wine. It gets called "Shinydome" around these parts because it has a picture of a bald guy on the front and the word "dome" is often used to mean "head". Once I was at a rather large party where everyone was getting gassed in the garden of my girlfriend at the time's house. Everyone got very stoned and very drunk and crashed out, all except me and my girlfriend, who by this time was very drunk and very horny. A bottle of Nobleman's Pale Cream, bought by someone unknown, lay in the garden from the beggining of the party at around 9 at night, to this point where all were sleeping at around 5 in the morning. Considering the weather in the region (I live in Scotland) the bottle was very cold. So I'd been smoking skunk all night, I was in a daze and this bottle had been chilled to fuck. I then decided it was a good time to go up to the bedroom to get drunk and have lots of sex because everyone else was sleeping, but I got into bed, downed the bottle (which I couldn't taste in the slightest because it was so cold, I was so stoned and I was so tired), mumbled shite for about 20 minutes whilst snuggling in with my girlfriend and then crashed out. I have never known any amount or type of alchohol consumed at one time to knock me out in 20 minutes, and this was a fortified wine.

Living in small-town Texas, good bum wines are readily available, except after certain oddly-legislated hours.
There is, however, a grocery store here that carries Taylor's Port (and a thorougly undrinkable Fairbanks). Thought I'd suggest it as a decent bumwine. The 50oz bottle runs about $8, and is enough for me to cook with and drink for about a week.

The firrst time i drank Mad Dog was a marvelous time. It was Frat Dad's night as i recall. All pledges were to chug one MD 20/20. My frat "dad" Served me the red flavor of mad dog in a flower vase with a special shot of everclear to make sure i was good and hammered compared to the rest of the pledges (im about 6'7 265 pounds). My fellow pledge sitting next to me was a pussy, and made me drink half of his, so he wouldnt be embarassed. I drank the entirety of it, and didnt spill any. Then magically a 40oz. of king cobra appeared on my lap when i finished. Withen an hour and a half i had finished that, and i was significantly black out drunk. We then proceeded to go streaking accross the street at our favorite sorority. within 15 minutes i had fallen down, drunk and naked (all 265 pounds of me) in a sorority house. Next thing i remember was puking my guts out like a wild hayina in a trash bin, wishing i was dead. Needless to say i woke up in the morning barefoot and still entirely wasted from a night of BUM WINE.

"Ode to cheap wine"
I was being chased by a 'Dog,
So I hopped aboard the 'Train,
Headed down toward Cisco way,
I saw a vision of a Thunderbird,
It would chase away my pain,
At the station I met a Wild Irish Rose,
I could tell she'd been around the block,
But she was sure to warm my toes.

There was a time in my life when I would set up "drinking challenges" for myself. Do x number of shots, drink an entire bottle of grocery store brand vodka, how many beer bongs can I do...smart things like that. One night my challenge to myself was to drink both an entire bottle of Thunderbird, and an entire bottle of Night Train. I remember finishing the Thunderbird...I don't remember how the Night Train ended. I still have those two empty bottles as a reminder, of something.

We definately have the most grizzled bums. Nothing like a failed industrial town to see the worst of the worst. I have walked around New York, Chicago, and Atlanta at night and I can tell you it's NOTHING like Detroit. Panhandlers don't sit idly while you walk by and ask for change, they FOLLOW you. Pretty soon you'll have 5-10 FOLLOWING you to your car. At least this was my experience. I try to stay out of downtown as much as possible. I live in Ann Arbor and usually stick to Dtown burbs.

One night 3 years ago, I decided to indulge so i drank a bottle of Banana Red MD 20/20, a bottle of stawberry cisco and a bottle of orange cisco. In the end I stole a frozen pizza and a box of fried chicken from a gas station and I ate my cell phone (did not actaully consume it but it was pretty ripped up and that phone was starting to suck.) In the end, that fried chicken and pizza did magical wonders for my hangover the next morning and my cell phone insurance gave me the provider's newest model. So remember kids 1 time out of 100, bum wine will bring you fruitful rewards, I'm Out.....

This morning has been a particularly bright morning
with all the snow we just received last night. being a
cleqr sky with all that snow and all, I commented to my wife that this was a hangover-type sun (bright and
inforgiving to the eyes) that I had once experienced
at MTSU after challenging the infamous Night Train
Express to a duel. It won.
It didn't help that my judgement was impaired by two
litres of Milwaulkee's Best (a.k.a. "The Beast")and a boatload of Death By
Chocolate made with Kaluha prior to the face off with
the King of "stupid things to do when already drunk"
beverages. It did not help that I was so blasted that I
thought it tasted good (you know you're drunk
when...)! It went down fast...It came up faster...when it finally decided to come up.
My wife has never heard of the beverage ( because
she's a top drawer lady of highest order). So, I
endeavored to Wikipedia the infamous libation and lo
and behold, it has an entry!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki /Night_Train_Express
Also there's a link that sent me here
I told my wife about how Night Train is well named,
because it is a fast-moving freight train to Hell. I
know from personal experience that this beverage is
about 150 heavy freight cars long and has a caboose...or least
that's what felt like what shot out of my throat...I
could even taste the bottoms of the engineer's boots!
That hangover was sublime,if you're really into pain
(which I really am not). I have never done that since.
I have to admit that when I saw the picture of that
cursed bottle on this website, I started to sweat. The
reviews of these product are hilarious...

I have read thru the postings & don;t see "drunk tank" stories here so much. I am sure many of the people posting have never had the pleasure of sleeping one off in a tank full of piss & shit & puke sodden BUMS!! Another good bum trick is the old "HOTFOOT" with a full pack of matches between the toes. Tbe best Hotfoot is on another sleeping bum with his shoes under his head so another bum don't steal them. a lit cigarette in the pack between the toes starts the ball rolling. The sleeping bum usually shoots wide awake screaming like he's been shot & puts his foot in the 1st water he comes to which in the tank is the shitter!!!! all the other bums usually laugh their asses off but sometimes it backfires. Nothing meaner than a pissed bum bent on revenge. then it goes back to the street for the ending. I have a couple of can scrounger bums that hit the dumpsters where I work so I put a bottle in there now & then for them. They think Santa knows they like Thunderbird & Wild Irish Rose. Makes you sorta feel all warm inside to help a man down on his luck. All the best. CHIEF

I would like to give a shout out to all my albany NY peoples who spent many a night stuffing bums with steel reserve, and drinking mad dogs until a street fight broke out. By the way, Albany NY should be on the list of most grizzled bum cities. Albany Ny takes all the waste from NYC drug rehab clinics and alcohol clinics, and when they figure out they cant help them they send them up to Albany to get them out of the way and let the college kids have fun with them. the first time i drank MD 2020 was during the 2000 subway series, and i woke up with a broken hand, a friend with a split head, and neither of us had any idea how it happened. was a beautiful experience. I have been to the promised land. Back in the late 1980s (underaged then!) I had several bottles of Ripple. I think my friends and I bought them in Ohio. It was a one-off purchase, but we got a couple of bottles. As I recall, it was in between Boones Farm and MD/20/20 in flavor. A little on the kool-Aid side.
Great site!!!

Cisco (liquid crack) caused me much grief during my college years. During a episode with three bottles of Cisco, I blacked out and woke up naked and muddy in my ex-girlfriends bushes out side her window. I don't remember anything. That shit should be illegal.

Favorite: Thunderbird |
Thunderbird was the underage drinker's tipple of choice when I was a teenager. I took 8 bottles of Thunderbird to my first festival. After partaking of a couple of herbal cigarettes I necked all 8 bottles in about 10 hours and woke up in a ditch about 2 days later, covered in shit and unable to move. I spent the rest of the weekend shuffling around like an extra from Dawn of the Dead, smelling like a septic tank in a heatwave. There's no cheaper way of destroying you brain cells than a bottle of Thunderbird Red, apart maybe from mixing White Ace and Special Brew.

Ugh, Thunderbird is the WORST! Might as well be drinking rubbing alcohol! There was a large supply of a wine called "TEMPLE" back at this liquor store I went to a while ago. Didn't check the alcohol content, but it was cheap, came in a variety of sizes, from pint to gallon, had screw-top lids, and was a creepy Crayola red. Can't seem to find any info on it thru Google. Anyone help me out?

Reprazent UK up in this! A few people have mentioned the UK bum's preference for White Lightning or similar strong ciders. But there is another variety of gut-rot equally beloved of wino?s, at least here in Bristol, SW England. I speak of ?Strong Lager?. ?It?s not wine. This is bumwine.com?, I hear you say. But hold up. Firstly, they taste almost nothing like real lager, they have an industrial burning-clutch type of taste. Also, they pack about 10%, which is not attainable by normal fermentation methods ? the yeast is killed way before that concentration can be reached. Believe me, I?ve tried. I can only get to about 6.5% with home brew techniques. So god knows what evil process they use to jack it up to 10% odd. Some brands even call their product ?barley wine?. So if it's not exactly wine, it's definately not lager either! The big 2 brands are Tennants Super (aka ?Super T?, comes in an unmistakeable purple can) and Carlsberg Special Brew aka ?Spesh? (which comes in ridiculous gold can, like they are kidding anyone this is pure tramp-juice).
